How to catch a mother cat and kitten? UPDATED PG 2

We've been feeding a skinny little stray kitty for several weeks now. I suspected she had kittens somewhere so I was hesitant to try to catch her. Yesterday she brought a single kitten to our front porch, which is where we feed her. I believe they slept under my bay window last night. The mom looks pretty young and the kitten looks healthy.

I already have 2 dogs and 3 indoor cats. I can't bring "Cleo" & "Tut" into our home because of the fear of feline leukemia or other diseases to my kitties.

Since the appearance of Tut yesterday we've decided to try to catch the mom and grab the kitten. I've tried to find a cat adoption place to take them but it isn't as easy as finding a dog adoption place. That's a whole other story. There is a place that is close called Good Mews that I'm praying will take them, get them the necessary vet work, spay/neuter and try to adopt them out.

My thought on catching them is to put Cleo's food in my cat carrier and when she goes into the carrier I will shut the door. She's warmed up a bunch the past several weeks and rubs against my legs but I've never picked her up. From there hopefully I can catch Tut and put him in the carrier. I'll make sure to clean the carrier before I use it for my kitties.

Any ideas about cat adoption places in Metro Atlanta or any suggestions on how to snag these kitties would be appreciated.

My vet has a large animal trap that I use to catch stray animals. I have caught 2 kittens and a few feral cats with it. Good Luck!!!!

BTW we spay/neuter them then release them

I may need to find a low cost spay/neuter. I told my vet about the situation and their quote $114 apiece to spay/neuter/ Another $150 apiece for shots and deworming.

i would check with your local no kill shelter/rescue group...normally they have a feral cat program

There is a place that is close called Good Mews that I'm praying will take them, get them the necessary vet work, spay/neuter and try to adopt them out.

You might call Good Mews and see if they have a trap. Our local animal shelter has a trap that I've used to catch a stray or two.

Good luck! Being a cat lover myself, I appreciate you taking care of them and trying to find a good place that will see to their needs.

I would keep trying to earn the trust of mom kitty then her baby may come around to. If they are friendly they are more likely to find a home.
You are doing a wonderful thing by helping this poor kitty and her baby.

My vet suggested a local Cat Clinic. No help from them

The Humane Society said they're pretty full and chances may be ok for the kitten but not mom.

Another local cat hospital gave me the name of a lady that might help. When I call her number I get Life University.....

NOt sure how close you are to Rome, but try the Sterile Feral. They help with feral cats.

Mom showed up today without the kitten. I am attempting not to panic since she's been visiting us for breakfast, lunch, second lunch and dinner for the past several weeks without JR. I'm hoping he's ok. As soon as he shows up I'm going to attempt to capture them.

The best bet may be to give the kitten to a shelter, since he/she should be easily adopted. For mom, you may want to spay and release. Being feral, she may not adapt well to being a house pet anway. At lest this way, she can't have any more kittens.

Can you continue to care for them outside and encourage them to be friendly with you?

Then maybe you could keep in close contact with one of the shelters and move them when there is space available?

The thing is I don't really consider the mom feral. When we first started feeding her she wouldn't get near us. She ate after we went in the house. For the past month or so she is all over us. Rubbing our legs and in and out of our feet. I haven't tried to pick her up but we can pet her.

You could try spot society. I know they have low cost spay/neutering and they may have contacts with a rescue. They are in Marietta off Lower Roswell.

one thing with Cat rescue groups that I have found - they almost always say no at first. Especially if they have an inkling that the cat is being fed and is not in immediate danger. In some cases, persistence really pays. Especially if you are willing to make a donation at the same time that you drop of the cats.

Cats are hard to place. There are just so many of them and not as many homes. Good Luck. It is so hard to know what to do.

I have found exactly what you have described. They all say they're full. I just talked to a woman who said to beg and make a donation. I have no problem with that I just need to find the kitten now. Mom has been snoozing on the pourch this afternoon but DD and I search all of the places we saw JR yesterday and we can't see or hear him. We're leaving on a trip to Indiana on Friday so I'm going to give mom another day to bring JR back.

Sorry It took me a while.

I was doing it from memory. I had to ask my co-worker who has actually used both of the below services. He said he believed that one of them was going to move the last time he used them but he can't remember which one but he's pretty sure these are the correct phone numbers.

These are actually more towards the other end of Lower Roswell near the South Loop.

I know Dr. Michael Good at Town & Country Vet Clinic is also good about helping with spay-neutering services. I don't have their number handy sorry.

Atlanta Pet Rescue is also usually great but they are closer to downtown.

Aw, bless you for doing what you can to help them. I hope you can catch and place them soon. Every one cat that is taken off the streets is one less in danger and one less that can continue reproducing/spreading disease. WTG Marcie, good luck with it!
