How to book with the possibility of a split stay at 7 months

We are looking to buy in the future so sorting out how many points we would need. We like to go for 10 nights as we live abroad so like a long trip. We have come every 2 years and would like to continue that. We would stay in a 2 bedroom as we have 4 kids that travel with us. We would buy where we want to stay but I like the idea of maybe doing split stays if a place we also want to stay is available. So would you book two 5 night stays at the 11 month mark and then wait til after the 7 month mark to see what other options would be available to switch? Would we be able to combine the 2 at our home resort as to not move rooms if we decided to not do the split stay?

Yes.

If I hope to do a split stay, that's how I do it. I book two consecutive reservations at my home resort and when the 7 month window opens, I use the modify feature to change one of them (if there is a availability). Sometimes, I have to waitlist. If I am unsuccessful (or if I give up on waitlisting), then I just send an email to MS and ask to combine the two home resort reservations.

It's really the safest way to make sure you don't end up with nothing, LOL.

Thank you! I have not even dug into how to how wait-list works but good to know that modifying and now waitlisting are a thing! Now to keep saving and decide on a home.

I am doing this for May. I just booked my first 3 days yesterday, and I will book the last 4 tomorrow. I am hoping to modify one of them at 7 nights to something other than our home resort. If we cannot, I will wait list somewhere my son wants to stay.

I did this for Xmas/ NY. A 6 and 5 night separate booking at SSR (in different names so they don't auto merge) and swapped it to Beach Club and BLT. Then it's just a straight swap.
