Any suggestions as to how to avoid NJ--Del. Mem Bridge?
Just got back from Baltimore. Later in the month we will be driving to HHI and after this weekend I want to avoid the NJ Turnpike into Del. over the bridge. I was thinking of taking I-95 towards PA and then heading South on I-95 until it hooks up again in Del. after the bridge. Has anyone traveling from NY/NJ ever done this? We usually just stay on TPKE, I am not even sure how to get onto or rather stay on I-95. It looks like Exit 6 :confused3

You can avoid the Del Memorial Bridge by taking 295 South to the Commodore Barry Bridge and crossing over into PA there. This will put you on 95S around Chester, PA. I am not sure of the exact exit number ( 11 might be it) but you will be looking for 322 West which is near Bridgeport. There is plenty of signage for the bridge so you really can't miss it.

The only problem with that is that 95 traffic is atrocious through Chester.

There's been a couple times on our way up to Philly when we abandon 95 and go up to Jersey side because traffic is much easier.

If you're traveling south on the NJTP get off at exit 7A which puts you on rt 195 and head west (away from Great Adventure) take this to 295 south (approx. 6-7 miles). Take the exit for Walt Whitman Bridge (left exit) $3 toll and then pick up 95 south. 295 south runs parrellel to the NJTP in south jersey. At times you will see the NJTP on your left.

Like the OP said traffic around Chester can be bad but it all depends upon what time of day you are traveling there.

Similarly, 295 South can be an absolute parking lot during both rush hours. Stay away from both rush hours and it's a fine route to take.
