How soon can you use add on points after purchase

Hi everyone,

Could anyone tell me how soon you are able to book and use add on DVC points. We are in the process of booking our first DVC vacation for 3 wks next July. Our home resort is AKV and with the room requirements we need we are struggling to make our points stretch even using our banked points our DUY points and borrowing.

We did phone our guide to see if we could add on points in the UK but because our finance is through Disney we cannot do this unless we are actually there to do the business.

My husband who is greener than me about DVC asked the question if we added on points on our first day would we be able to use them immediately to cover our point shortfall? I did say that i would doubt that very much but i would ask some great folks who most probably would know

You may do better to rent points for your shortfall from another member and add when you get there...

You will have the use of any points you add on directly through Disney almost immediately after you sign the paperwork.

That said, you cannot make/hold a reservation without enough points to cover it. So unless you plan to take a big chance on availability for the last night of your planned vacation at WDW, you can't use any potential add on points to make up the shortfall you currently have.

As previously suggested, a better choice to cover your vacation would be to find another member to transfer you the points you need

Thanks for your replies, we are looking at renting as an option, it is just because we want to add on we don't want to pay out too much as that money can be put towards our deposit.

If you don't want to spend the dollars to rent see if you can get someone to trade with you... there are a lot of folks that have banked pts that they can not use... if you can work out a trade... they make a ressie for you and you make one for them (remember you can only do one transfer in or out per UY) you will not be outlaying the cash... in essence you will be advancing yourself the points you will be buying by trading with another member. The trick is to find someone willing to trade...

No, the date they credit your account with the add on points would have nothing to do with use year. But maybe I am not understanding the question?

Sorry Carol, what i meant was, last yr when we purchased our points we were given incentive points that could be used straight away, if we purchase add ons next yr will the UY make a difference to whether we would have those points to use immediately as mentioned in my first post.

AFAIK, they aren't currently offering incentive points for either new purchases or add ons. No need, since all of the resorts are now open (or will be as of 8/4/09) so any points purchased are available for immediate use.

But I can't think of any way for you to use add on points for your next vacation if you don't buy the add on until you arrive. The problem is availability. There isn't likely to be space left for the last night or nights if you don't make a reservation until you arrive. You can't make a reservation without the points in your account and that won't happen until you actually complete the transaction.
