Until the terrible news about the devestation in Southeast Asia, I never realized that Thailand had become a tourist destination. I am shocked at how little I know about the world today. My personal "world" has been shrinking over the years due to medical problems with my son, and it seems that I wasn't even aware of it.
I sincerely hope that the people affected by this tragedy will eventually find some relief and hope for the future.

I was watching the coverage on the news with my father last night and they had interviews with people who were vacationing in Thailand. My father was confused by that until I told him that it is, in fact, a tourist destination. He was quite surprised, so you're not the only one. :)

You know, I never knew about Pee Pee Island (sp) before. the Island where Leonardo Dicaprio's "The Beach" was filmed? The whole place was flattened by the tsunami and they are flying the survivors out to other places.

I actually got out the globe with my five year old neice to look up some of these Islands. It's just so horrific. :guilty:

I didn't realize it either until a friend of ours told us that was one of the places they considered for their honeymoon

I guess the one good thing about this tragedy is that it might be able to open everyone's eyes to the world at large and bring nations together in a harmonious way to aid in the relief effort. If that happens, it will be a nice tribute to those lost.

Maybe its a CA thing? But I know alot of people who vaction in and around Phu ket, Thailand. I have a couple of gifts my friends brougght me back there from last Christmas. Thankfully none were there this Christmas. My good friends, friends (I know a person who knows a person) were but away from the major damage and made it out without incidence or injury and are staying there to help with relief efforts. They (the friends who've been) say its amazingly beautiful and very cheap to eat and stay there. My dad whose also been as a sideline of a business trip did not care much for it, but I suspect that was more due to the business aspect of the trip not the place.
