How sick have YOU been and still run a race?

I am suddenly in the position of contemplating not running. I feel horrid. I've been sitting here in my room for an hour trying to work up the energy to go to the expo where I will try to not breathe on people.

Can a 9 year old run the 5k on his own?

This is rotten. Time for more echinacea and emergen-c!

I have people at home and at work with colds so for the last week or longer I've been running around with hand sanitizers and taking Emergen-C,so far all good but it's stressing me out just like the temperatures of the race.I can't wait to get to race day feeling good and with some cool dry weather.

Are you doing a half or the 5k? I ran/walked a half last month while trying to pass a kidney stone. Wasn't fun, but I finished. If it's a 5k, I would just go out and take it easy, moving around and being out in the fresh air might do you some good? As far as your 9 year old, my 12 year old daughter has done over 25 races 5 & 10ks, but one of us has always been in the race. She can run on her own but someone is usually in front or behind her b a few minutes. What's important is someone is at the finish line and can meet up as soon as he finishes.

Good luck!

I second this! If it's the 5k I say go for it. They don't sweep so you'll be able to finish even if you need to slow down. If you decide you can't, set up a specific place to meet with your son at the finish line.

Hope you feel better soon!

I walked a 5K with a severe back spasm, then 6 weeks later ran the Wine and Dine half still not 100%. I am actually seeing the doctor about it tomorrow. I am scheduled to run Tinkerbell in 12 days, but just getting over the flu so hoping to rebound in time. Feel better!

My plan would be to head to the 5k well bundled and get your son in the corral. If you are feeling better, then head in with him... I would not run it if you are having any kind of chest issue unless he balks.

Likewise for the longer race act as though you are running the race. Set you alarm and lay out clothing and head to be early. You never know how you will feel on race morning. Worst case on race morning is that you get up, get ready and out to the staging area then decide to punt.

Hang in there.

Oh, in answer to your question, I ran with the flu last year. I only knew that I did not feel well but was not running a fever that morning... or so my story goes.

That's so frustrating!

I did the Wine & Dine half with a sinus infection and stuffy nose this year.
And I did a trail half marathon after having chest congestion and cough for 3 weeks straight. Breathing was kinda challenging, but I was fine with walking when I needed to.

I hope you are feeling better soon!

I did dumbo last year with bronchitis and a sinus infection and it was super hot this year.

I ran the full last year with the flu. I got it on Thursday (puking on a plane, fun!) but walked around AK on Saturday and was able to eat. I drank normally the whole time.

I was super slow, but I felt awesome afterwards!

Ran dumbo with an upper respiratory infection and don't think I took a deep breath either race.. Did okay until the dirt trail of the half (mile 8) then fought to the finish..

Time was abysmal but hey I finished and wasnt the last one!

I'm hoping my answer to your question won't be, "I'll tell you after the marathon on Sunday." I'm still trying to shake this cough I've had since a week before Christmas, and I'm concerned that I'm getting sicker again. I've got a headache this afternoon, and I almost never have headaches except sometimes when I'm sick.

And if you do start the race, don't make a decision to bail based on the first mile. It takes a while to warm up and get into the swing of things.

Good Luck!

2012 I had a blasted sinus infection that would not go away. I had never had a sinus infection before. Didn't know what it was. Took me three weeks and a round of antibiotics to get over it partly because I kept thinking I could shake it. I have since learned when I get sinus infections I need to go to the doctor for stronger medicine. It got bad enough that my left ear got inflamed from flying overseas (spent Christmas in Saudi Arabia where my Dad was working) that I was also on anti-inflamatories so I could get it down to the point I could actually hear again. I was still on said meds when I lined up for the WDW marathon. Probably not the best choice I've ever made in retrospective. Especially after missing three weeks of training from being sick. I managed to make it to somewhere between miles 15-16 before I got passed by the sweepers. So not a happy ending. But looking back I'm just glad the Urgent care in the Orlando airport was able to get me back on my feet so quickly (we got there Wednesday I think that year, thank god I made the decision to switch from Goofy (I was originally signed up for that training wasn't going well and I switched)) and it was probably a miracle I got that far considering how training went in the last bit of time.

And if it gets bad I can't recommend the Urgent Care at the airport enough. They really are a nice lot. Or they were when I went there two years ago. Wish I didn't know that but that's life.

***** DISCLAIMER: THINGS I DO FOR A RACE ARE NOT RECOMMENDED BY MOST DOCTORS SO PLEASE DON'T DO THEM AT A RACE*****

NOTE OF WARNING. I run through most colds, strep etc. Unless my lungs are clogged, or my eating compromised I will run. My doctors have stated since I exercise a lot this is fine in my case provided I follow the rules about lungs, and nourishment.

HOWEVER I AM CRAZY! SO PLEASE DONT DO WHAT I HAVE DONE!

1. In 2010 I ran the Nike Women's half in San Francisco on a bunch of steroids. I was being evaluated to start Methotrexate my arthritis had failed its protocol. This is a very hilly half! Yes my doctor and I had a lot of horrible doping jokes.

2. In 2013 I ran the DC Nike Women's half on 2 antibiotics, and psuedophedrine :/. In my defense it was the last day of the drugs and they were the type that stay in the system an extra 10 days. I was clean sinus wise when on the decongestant, without it I was a fountain of snot. I over heated but still ran a PR, just not the PR I should have run.

3. In 2013 I ran the Marine Corps 17.75K in full flare. It was hilly! I didnt have time to go to the doctor after he cleared me 10 days before to recheck. My knees swelled up like softballs and bruised after that :/.

4. In a week I will run my last race BB (before biolgic). My situation is very similair to 2010 only I have more joints affected, and we agreed to no steroids this time before the new drug because I've eaten way too many lately. It will possibly be my worst half time ever. However it is Tinkerbell, and I have good shoes to take the impact, and great meds for after I am done to help with the pain and muscle angries over pushing the joints over the edge. So as you all joked about dropping beers at WDW this weekend I'll probably be choking back a narcotic at the line with a pedialyte ;).

I often run with colds but I dont push a race pace. I run to keep my system on its version of normal.

As to the joint issues because I train with them my doctor clears me for my races. I have been cleared for tink and for princess. My doctor is well aware my situation is not good right now, but running makes me happy so as long as I am not pushing these races my doctor says I can do them. He has only pulled me from one race, and that was last fall we'd run out of options and the distance was too much for my situation. I am a champ at running 13 miles in this situation though.

**** PLEASE CONSULT A DOCTOR BEFORE TRYING ANY OF THE ABOVE MENTIONED STUNTS. NONE OF THIS IS RECOMMENDED FOR ANYONE****

Bottom line is dont do something you dont think your body can handle. My version of insanity is not recommended. My doctor is aware of it and allows it because it isnt going to make the long term situation worse right now other than the immediate repercussions are a problem which I know how to handle. I'm packing epsom salts, and foot wraps for post race :).

In 2005 I came down with a case of food poisoning on 3 days before the Disney Marathon. Struggled, but managed to finish.

Thank you all. :):):):)

I was the one who started crying three separate times at the expo because I was so miserable. I'm so proud lol.

DS and I had the 5k, he has a Mile tomorrow, and I have the half scheduled.

When we got back from the expo I bought some western OTC medicine and drugged myself up. Slept most of the day, slept all night, was able to accomplish the 5k.

We will see about Saturday!

So sorry about passing along the plague. But we aren't going to parks, so it's limited to other runners. Oh, and their families. Who are probably going to parks. Hmm. Yep, sorry.

The biggest self-based problem is that I have NO appetite. Not even for water. Problem. Last night I ate ice cream for dinner. And couldn't taste it. I know full well I have to eat and get the water in! It's hard though.

Oh, Molly--I'm SO sorry! What a shame! Play it by ear for the half. Walk it if necessary and give it your best shot. Between the weather-related travel messes and all the sicknesses going around, seems like a lot of people might be drooping through the races!

Aw thanks.

This morning I feel like I've turned the corner. And I'm currently trying to eat and drink like I haven't been able to for days!

At least there's a chance at a hot tub after the Half, unlike the previous week! DS is lucky enough to be sitting in one right now to recover from our 5k and his Mile today.

I'm so sorry! I ran the princess half last year after a wicked, long cold. I felt like my lungs had shrunk to half their size. I took it slow and made it.
I hope you're able to finish the half. I'll be volunteering at the 8.5 mile fuel stop, so if it makes you feel better to have a random stranger to say hi to, look for the pregnant lady handing out Gu :) Good luck!

I felt horrible before last year's Tinkerbell Half, I had the chills and was in bed by 5pm the night before. I was chatting with someone on the shuttle who had a knee injury but she mentioned that even if you don't finish, you still get the medal. So I decided to at least make the attempt and I could just call it quits if my body said no. I felt much better in the morning and finished the race in decent time. Just get lots of rest and your body will tell you go or no go.
