How should this cost be split?

By bedrooms - the people staying in the "master suite" shouldn't pay the same as the people who have to share a bathroom with kids! We vacation with 2 other couples, sometimes 3, in a HUGE house - we have a big suite, 2 bedrooms, bath, and wet bar, and pay the same as the couple in the master suite. The couple who stays in a q bedroom with a bathroom outside pay around half of what we pay. There's another, smaller bedroom there too - when we have had more people, whoever ended up with that room paid a little less than the 3rd couple.

Example: $1200 rental, 4 couples
master $400
efficency $400
3rd bedroom $250
4th bedroom $150

$1200 rental, 3 couples
master - $475
efficiency $475
3rd bedroom $250

That seems reasonable. :thumbsup2

Thought I would post this scenario here to get some unbiased answers!

We have a group of friends/family that rent a vacation home together each year for about 4 or 5 days. We stay in the same resort area, but usually rent a different house each year. We are in the process of looking for this year's house and this question has come up.

We have 4 families going; 3 are families of 2 (husband and wife) except for one family that is a family of 4 (husband and wife and 2 kids). The house is a set cost and not based on how many people go. So, should the cost of the house be split by family or by person (with the family of 4 obviously paying more if it's split by person)?

The very first house we rented years ago was priced per person ($XXX for 10 people, $XXX for 12 people...) so that's how we split it. However, the recent houses have not been priced this way - it's a set amount for the 4 or 5 days.

So, do we split by family or by person?

Don't know, but we would get our own house close by and hang out with the people during the day and have the peace of going to our own place at the end of the day. That way the others could squabble over money.

I would split by how many bedrooms each family uses. If everyone is using just one, same price. If most families use one bedroom and the other family uses two bedrooms then they should be charged more.

I agree!:goodvibes

I would split by bedroom. If those kids need a room and it costs everyone more because you need a bigger house, they should be responsible for the cost. I wouldn't treat them any different than if another couple was in their place.

But I might also send everyone an email and see what the consensus is.

We split even between all adults (nothing for children under 18) we sorta thought if they had a resort room the kids would have been included so that is way we did it house.. no tickets or food was included in that. food would be split or bought per family needs.:yay:

We've always done it by family. Kids sleep free!

Again I'm not knocking anyone who feels different but I just can't imagine asking someone to pay more because they take up more living space

And I can't imagine asking someone else to pay more because my family takes up more living space. Just depends on how you look at it. :)

Nobody is paying more though, if you have a bedroom to sleep in and a place to sit and eat or watch TV and a bathroom to use just like everyone else staying in the house, the "living space" is the same. When we plan a family vacation, we plan to find a house that accomodates everyone because we plan on staying together, we don't look at it like we need to get a bedroom because xxxx has 2 kids and xxxx have 1 etc etc.We know going in that we are going to need a house with a certain amount if bedrooms. We split the cost of a house that we are all using. We wouldn't even think of dividng the cost by how much space someone is using within the house. Little things like that just don't matter to some :)

I say if they are getting a 5 bedroom house instead of a 4 bedroom house to have a room for the kids then the family with the children should pay more. If the kids are staying in the parents bedroom then it should be split evenly.

Huh. Asking someone else to pay extra for their vacation just so my kid can have a bedroom isn't a "little thing" to me. I'd feel pretty bad about it. If we have to get a larger house because we need X+1 bedrooms instead of X bedrooms, obviously it's going to cost more, and I'd feel horrible expecting my friends or family to absorb that cost when it's all because of my kid. It would feel really selfish to me and I just couldn't do it. Even if they never said anything, my own conscience would prevent it.

Perhaps there is an iphone app that will make all the calculations for us, based on square footage each person occupies, based on number of kids, based on number of bedrooms, based on how much toilet paper each person uses, etc. Problem solved.

I think the OP said that they did not choose this house for the number of bedrooms. They are picking this house because of it's location and amenities. It also happens to have plenty of room. If I understood correctly, the OP and friends would be renting the same house whether the kids were coming or not. They did not rent a larger house to accommodate the kids.

Previous rentals have been priced "per person" by the owner, so it was a no brainer. This rental is a flat rate, regardless of how many people stay.
