How Scary is HoJos

I am considering a list minute trip for the holidays. The rates are obviously high. Dream unlimited is quoting $39.00 a night for the Howard Johnson Maingate Resort
8660 West Irlo Bronson Memorial Highway
Kissimmee, FL

I assume it must be scary? Any comment on recent stays? True driving distance to MK parking lot, etc?

I have heard a few good things on this post in the past, I say a few cause it isn't as popular as on site, and when we get back I will try to remember to add a post and let you know what we thought of it. Try www.tripadvisor.com. They offer ratings from other travelers about various hotels. I don't know how they choose what hotels to rate, but give it a try.

I stayed there one night when we arrived late, and I didn't want to waste DVC points. This was July 2002. I found the place to be a little "off". The room had a rusty pipe in the middle of the floor, I don't know what it connected to or what the purpose was. The bathroom was not clean enough for me--I waited to shower after checking in at Disney! There was a "pre-licked" envelope with little jewels all over it thaking me for my generous tip! (YUCK)! and with the dreams rate you have to leave a $100 deposit to have the phone turned on at check-in. I opted to leave the phone turned off since I had my cell with me and I intended to leave for Disney as soon as possible.
I guess it would be ok if youjust needed a place to sleep.
If it means the difference between going to Disney or not, I guess I'd do it, but for me never again!

It might be worth checking biddingfortravel.com for advice on a priceline bid. I've gotten the Best Western, Lake Buena Vista for just $35 a night.

scary means different things to different folks - but compared to the hotel in chattanoga we stayed in where the bible was open on the bed and had cockroaches crawling across it - I'll take the HoJo! No seriously, we've stayed there three times (admittedly not for a year or two) and are going back this year - I had one bad room which smelt of smoke but they changed it. Otherwise it's been clean, there's three pools, enough room to jog round the exterior and it's about 15 minutes drive time to the parks (if going to animal kingdom take the shelbourne road shortcut). If you're really worried, the room rate on the website itself was only $46 when I booked for New Year time - you could book it, check the cancellation policy and leave if you don't like it. I know that this year when we check in it's going to be vile isn't it - after I've spent many posts defending it!!
