How saving $35 a month could cost you even more.

Working in a telecommunication central office I will tell you that if you cancel you phone line we remove the wire in our office that connects your home to the network. There is no way you will be able to call 911 from a phone line that way. If you are looking into ways to cut the coast of a land line look at the rate plans that are availabe to you. I know in my area we have a per min plan, 30 call plan, and unlimited. See if you have a maintance plan that could be cut. A lot of people have features that are not needed that could help save money.

As for routing of phone calls, if your area has e-911 which most do the second you dial 911 they know where the call orginates from. Cell phones and VOIP each call has to be processed befor it can be correctly routed.

I know in my area if I were to call 911 it would be routed to the county dispatcher to get to my local police/fire. If I were to call the non-emergency line the 1st thing it says is to call 911 in an emergency. I live in the middle of 5 different police/fire combonation and know of neibors with VOIP who took 7-10 mins to get routed to the correct place to get help.

As for a land line and power issues there is nothing better. Each central office is equiped with batterys and generators to keep the switchs and landlines working. When that huge blackout that knocked out from Chicago to DC hit a few years back landlines stayed working but cell towers died after about 24 hours and VOIP was totally dead.

As someone mentioned smartphones and kids. DS and DD who are 8 and 9 know how to call 911 but would have trouble getting out of an app, into the phone app and dialing 911 if it was an emergency but picking up the reciver and hitting the three buttons I know they can do. All and all it all comes down to what you think your family needs.
