How "safe" is it to rent points?

It a matter of your personal preference.

You can click on the poster's user name and click on the "find more posts by..." option. You can even read up on the poster's pervious posts.

There are posters that have been around forever but are mostly lurkers and thus have very few posts.

Others may have jumped into the Disboard craze and joined recently but are constantly posting and racking up those post numbers! Lol!

I don't think either makes a big difference if you feel comfortable with the few or many posts that they do have.

Personally, as a DVC member or a potential renter, I myself, might feel a little uncomfortable if the poster either has very few posts or joined the Disboards very recently and ALL their posts are on the Rent/Trade board. I'm sure that many of them are legimate. Many were probably lurkers that never bothered to register until they had points to rent or wanted to rent points. Maybe some had long posting histories and registered a new user name just to rent out or in.

It's just that for me the only way I can establish a level of trust to even work with someone is to "hear" them a bit through their posts and that is hard to do if all their posts are about renting transactions. Others may feel differently and may just want to talk to them personally on the phone.

Since a DVC rental transaction is based by mutual trust, there's no magic formula. You have to find someone who you feel comfortable enough to work with, to trust with your money and your vacation plans with. This may be based on their posting history, their actual conversation with you, etc.

Some people will never feel comfortable enough with any "stranger" to trust them with their vacation plans, much less their money - so they may not be a good candidate to rent DVC points, especially if they will stress about it the entire time before and during the trip - who wants a stressful vacation?
