just curious...

if I wanted to plan a last minute trip to disney and wanted to rent DVC points from an owner.. what is the minimum time frame I could do it in? I know there are going to be a lot of factors that are involved in this.. I was just wondering if anyone could give me a basic time frame though.

thanks! :thumbsup2

Its not so much renting the points from an owner thats a problem. Its finding the room type, at the resort you want to stay at, on short notice. Weekend stays will be easier to get then week days, SSR and OKW are your best bets.

It could be done on one day notice, with the right person. You would have to be flexible and pay via paypal (or something similar) and probably pay upfront.

You might be able to find someone with an existing reservation - in that case less than 30 days. But you will have to plan your vacation to match their dates.

DVC availability usually gets pretty tight about 90 days out, so it becomes hard to find consecutive days at ANY resort around then. Sometimes you'll get lucky, sometimes you won't. As an owner its easy to pick up the phone and check for yourself, but I see a lot of non-response over on the rent/trade boards for those sorts of trips - quick timeframe rentals are not the best bet for the owner - they have to make a few phone calls for something that is probably not going to be available, then there is the risk of getting the payment and all that through in a timely manner. Plus at 30 days the reservations become functionally non-cancellable. Easier and less risky to find someone who is looking further out. However, you can always post or respond to points to rent posts and see what happens - I'm sure there are plenty of owners who would be willing to make the calls.

Plus how quickly could you pay the member. They might want full payment before they tie up their points in your short time frame reservation.

Agree. Because of the consequences of canceling a DVC reservation, last minute rentals are really risky for the owner.

I would think that any owner contemplating a rental within 60 days of arrival would want 100% payment, with no option for cancellation or rescheduling, before actually making the reservation. Many owners would not even consider a short-term rental unless they are just stuck with a ressie they had to cancel inside of 30 days.

Realistically, I think you'd have to also be willing to take whatever you could get. DVC operates pretty close to 100% capacity all the time, so as noted above, availability will be difficult...but not impossible.

An owner could check availability for you, but that's really just a useless exercise for last minute ressies. The owner needs to be able to jump on an availability -- not get the info, play phone tag with you, and then wait for payment. The availability will be gone by the time they call MS back to book.
