If you are considering buying 2-way radios, maybe my story will help you. Before our 02/2001 trip I purchased 4 Cobra radios (with 36 subchannels) from a link on www.mysimon.com . I even got one for DS (6) because he is such a gadget freak and I had no intention of spending the vacation arguing with him over who was going to carry the radio. With discount and rebates the radios came out to $36 each.
As soon as our flight landed, DH said he and DD would head over to claim our luggage while DS and I picked up the rental car. I would then drive over to baggage claim and pick them and our luggage up. As we parted ways, DH remembered the radios and we turned them on. DS and I successfully navigated the Emerald Aisle, checked out our car and headed towards baggage claim. Unfamiliar airports are my absolute least favorite place to drive, but we found our way to the right spot. DH and DD were not there yet. So we circled around (no waiting allowed there) and again they werent there. On our third trip around DH called on the radio and said Where are you?, we have been waiting about ten minutes. As it turned out, they had gone down a level to the bus pickup area where cars were not allowed. I was able to instruct them back up to the correct area where we promptly met up and were on our way to the resort. I cant imagine the ******* if Id kept circling and he had kept waiting in the wrong spot indefinitely. The radios did come in handy several times in the parks after that (like when we had to split up briefly at Fantasmic), and it was a nice bit of security knowing each child had one in case s/he got lost. They really paid for themselves at the airport though!
