How old is too old for customs?

It's sad, but the end for those type of clothes comes much earlier for boys than girls. I am surprised that you can find these outfits past size 4T for boys. At home my fear would be teasing from other boys his age. The most wonderful thing about WDW however is that NO ONE KNOWS YOU!! That gives you a little wiggle room. I however would stick to matching t-shirts that are not too baby looking and match colors so you photos looks nice if you wish.

So true. No one may know you at WDW but those vacation photos live forever!

I think this is something you ask him. If he is willing to do shorts/pants or overalls then go for it. If not then just an applique tee will be cute. DS7 will happily wear an applique shirt and I am sure he would have no issues with jeans either. He just doesn't have any right now because it is always too hot when we go to Disney. I do prefer the less busy not as boutique-ish look for him though (always have). I just don't dig the boys big ole boutique outfits.

Just saw this thread and although the subject may have already been beaten to death I thought I would add that my DD10 still loves the customs (boutiquey and all!) She especially still expects them at Disney but I make her stuff for other occasions as well (4th of July, 1st day of school, Dr. Seuss' birthday, etc.) I will say, the style of the outfits is more mature... like tunics over skinny jeans or leggings. I'm in no hurry for her to grow up faster than she needs to and she enjoys the silly/fun aspects of the outfits. I think it really speaks to her self-esteem. Her friends are even always asking me to sew stuff for them. I had a couple of girls over today who I was teaching to make pajama bottoms. They all chose their own fabric and guess what they chose? Winnie the Pooh, the Little Mermaid and Wow Wow Wubzie. These girls are going into 6th grade! So in the end, it all depends on the kid!

What about coordinating your DS's clothing for WDW. Not necessarily matching, as that three-year age difference can be pretty big at that time in life! Colour coordinating the entire family each day might not be a bad idea--easier to keep track of everyone.

They also could wear caps or visors of some sort. Not necessarily Disney ones, unless that's what they prefer.

Have to agree about the age difference between boys and girls and customs or other special outfits. Girls tend to enjoy them longer--particularly at WDW!

I agree that it depends on the kid and in my family the girls seem to love it longer than the boys...as a side note I am a BIG kid ..there's a woman on eBay that does custom outfits to wear at Chef Mickeys...if she made adult sizes ( & I could afford it!) I would wear it in a heartbeat :lmao:

maybe she would be willing to make kitchen curtains for me :-)

I have 2 DSs - 3 and 6. There is NO WAY either one of them would wear any of those custom outfits. And the 6 year old would run away from home if I try to make him match his younger brother.

I would think for boys age 2-3 would be about the cutoff.

It makes me kind of sad to see how many people think over 3, or whatever age is too old for custom disney outfits.

I can see why older kids might not want to wear them to school, but why not on vacation? Kids grow up too fast. For heaven's sake, isn't a 8 year old still a kid:confused3

I do make more elaborate things for my younger dd, but I think the older kids can have cute custom things that co-ordinate that don't scream "I'm a dork"

I would rather spend the money on something they will willingly wear to BOTH school/daycare and on vacation. Makes no sense to me to pay money for something to only wear on vacation once or twice. Besides after age 3-4 I found my boys would rather wear Spiderman/Batman over many Disney characters as they tend to be for younger children. Mickey is ageless of course. :)

Can't agree more - girls and boys are totally different creatures. I can just see the look ds7 would give me if I wanted him to wear a custom disney shirt! :rotfl2: I am happy he doesn't give me a hard time with wearing polo shirts.

The problem is that the customs should be age appropriate. I am sorry but an 8 year old boy in Chef Mickey overalls is ridiculous. My kids wear matching stuff on vacation. However I make their outfits age appropriate and ask them what they would like to wear. If they didn't want any of it I would feel sad that they had grown past that time in their life but happy for them as they started on the next phase. YMMV.

I'm with you on this. A little sad that I can't dress them up all cutesy anymore, but they ask for tie dyed mickey head shirts and other mickey shirts every trip.

These are some samples from Sept. My boys were 8 and 12, and my nephew who was with us was 10

That's my 8 year old in the middle with the custom Jack Sparrow shirt I made.

I love your customs! See now that is age appropriate. Where did you get the Jack Sparrow material? I love that shirt!

I don't see how it's anyone else's business to decide what's ridiculous on someone else's child. Particularly at WDW. For goodness sake, grown men wear Goofy hats at Disney. I don't just make customs for my own kids, I make them for kids going on make a wish trips and yes, even 8 year old boys can enjoy and look good in customs. Overalls aren't my personal cup of tea for my 8 year old, but we just got back from WDW and my kids wore matching customs the whole trip, and got tons and tons of compliments on them. And they actually enjoyed it. Not once did my son say he wouldn't wear something I made, or that he didn't want to- nor did my 10 y/o. They don't wear their Disney customs to school- but then they don't wear their good Sunday clothes to school either. In the same way I wouldn't tell someone which hotel they must stay at when vacationing, I wouldn't tell someone what they should or shouldn't wear, either.

My ds wore overalls until the summer before kindergarten, so he was just shy of 5. I LOVED him in overalls (denim and khakis only... no seersucker or fancy linen ones lol) But once he hit kindy he just seemed to big in them LOL!

I just ordered him a custom T, appliqued stormtrooper head with mickey ears, for our upcoming trip and he's psyched! But that's just a tshirt... he would GLADLY wear a costume though, any time of the year, if I asked him to hahahah! We went to the baseball game last week and it was "halloween night" (bizarre, huh? but whatever...) and he wanted to wear his ninja costume from last halloween. I had to veto that because it was entirely too hot. But if it wasn't 90+ and humid I'd have let him.

Sorry for rambling. IMO 5 is cut off age for overalls and any 'customs' beyond a tshirt...

ETA - Tricia your customs are AWESOME!!!!!

I have to agree. If your child wants to wear a custom-let them. Personally I would rather see a child in a "custom" then some of the things I do see children dressed in.

I just don't understand why anyone would care that a strangers child was wearing a custom.

I guess my opinion is based on what my kids would want to wear. Ds7 is the youngest of 5, so he is probably "older" than other kids his age. I was thrilled when my dd11 was happy to wear a tinkerbell tshirt on our last surprise trip - she never wore it again, but WDW does bring out the inner-geek in all. But everyone has their limits.

Nobody cares if your kid wears customs. Nobody cares if your kids wear anything (again a general you). The OP asked a question and she got opinions. We all have them. My kids dress alike in WDW because they want to. They wear custom stuff as well. I don't however think an 8 year old boy looks cute in boutique overalls. That is my opinion which the OP asked for. Nobody is telling her what to do. They are simply answering her question.

Thank you.
It is actually a pillowcase. I made 2 shirts like that, one for DS and one for my nephew.

Thanks. I also feel that overalls are more for the toddler set, but as you can see my older boys do love the custom shirts.

The OP asked for opinions. This being the dis, I'm sure she knew she was going to get a variety! ;) Your opinion stated above is that 8 year old boys can enjoy and look good in customs. Others disagree. There's nothing wrong with expressing opinions especially when asked! People should do what they want. :confused3

My DS8 will be wearing "customs" at WDW. His are a bit more toned down. I will embroider the same design or a more boy design that matches his sisters on a polo by his shoulder and then have matching material for shorts. No overalls - he would kill me. I am also making several bowling shirts for him.
