It depends what kind of a kid you have. MY DD turned 9 this winter. She is very bright, excels at school, and has a wonderful, very real sense of humor. She understands sarcasm and irony and other sophisticated ideas. But she is also a very upbeat person full of wonder. She sparkles, it is just who she is... so when we are at Disney, she is totally into it. Last year when she was 8, we still did all the Princess things, and she still dressed up in a costume for our breakfasts at the castle and in Norway. And she does RnR, ToT, Everest, etc.
When she was little she loved princesses, and used to watch the movies wearing her constumes. Play time with friends often revolved around a princess theme, as did birthday parties. She actually believed she was a princess and we indulged her. When we were at Disney she would ask whether or not they were real princesses, and so forth. We told her they were the real princess of Disney World.
We don't talk about it much anymore. And she says that though she still likes princesses, she has asked me not to bring it up around her friends. But when I asked if she still wanted to go to princess meals this October, she was all over it. She even said she needs a new costume as the others don't fit. Even though we've made the shift to Hannah Montana and High School Musical, she's still a little princess at heart.
As another poster mentioned, when I put all her Pictures with Aurora together, the "princesses" all look different. But this smart kid who you can't get anything past, never says a thing about it. I gues it is how you present the magic.
