How often do you weigh yourself?

I keep getting different readings and it's driving me batty!!!! On Sunday morning I lost 3.5 pounds (yippeee). Later in the day I weighed myself and I had gained 1 pound so 2.5 pounds lost, then this morning I couldn't resist and weighed myself again and I was up 1.5 pounds!!!! I can't stand it. I know I should weigh myself just once a week so why do I keep torturing myself? I do get to keep my beautiful new clippie though, and I have lost 2 pounds total so that is a good thing. Don't mean to complain but I just want a consistent reading!!!! Anybody else experience this?

Thanks for letting me vent.

I weigh myself at the same time every morning - right after I get up, use the bathroom, and with no clothes on. That way, I know I'm getting the correct reading. NEVER weigh yourself later in the day - because you're holding water, etc. and you will always weigh higher.

I like to weigh myself every day because then I know what foods, drinks, and exercise have an effect on my loss. Example: If I eat ham for dinner, I will see a 1-2 pound gain the next morning because of the sodium. But, I know that's it's just water because of the sodium, and I don't get upset.

If I weighed myself only once a week - I could have ham the night before, but when I weigh myself for the week, I will think I gained instead of lost! When, in reality, it's only water.

Does this make sense?

I actually like your reasoning, especially having to lose as much weight as I need to lose. How do you figure out what you have actually lost for the week though? Like I said in my previous post, I lost 3.5, then 2.5, then 2.0. So which did I really lose? Do you do an average for the week?

Also, I can tell I'm holding on to water like a mad woman. I know it's just PMS but I've had close to 30 ounces of water this morning and it's all just weighing on me - heavily - yuck!!

I appreciate all the support I get from my WISH buddies.

I always think in terms of One Day at a Time, so I'm thinking daily, not weekly. But I guess if I had to figure a weekly amount, I would take an average after 7 days.

Don't worry about the water - sounds like you're due for a whoosh!! I'll send the fairy your way! :hyper: :hyper:

I also weigh daily (sometimes more than once a day  )
For me the fluctuations do drive me crazy at times but I just like to keep an eye on things so I can adjust my eating, exercising accordingly. As for how to count what you lost for the week, I think the best thing to do is pick a day and time to weigh yourself every week and THAT is the number you use. Even if you weigh yourself later in the week and your up it still wouldn't change your loss for the week because if you truly gained and it still showed up at your next weigh in then you would count it. For DH and I it's Sunday mornings at 9:00 AM for weigh in. We count that number for the week no matter what the scale says later. And for us it has shown to be an accurate reflection of our loss for the week. With the exception of 2 weeks I have always had some sort of loss even if it's small so this way is working for us. Find what works best for you and stick with it. Don't try to change your loss for the week based on fluctuations in the day as you'll drive yourself

I also weigh myself every morning before hitting the shower. I have noticed that my good or bad behavior doesn't register till the second day. So if I'm bad on Saturday, I won't notice it until Mon morning.
For my weekly weight loss, I pick a day (Wed) for my "official" weigh in day. My weight loss for the week is whatever happens between those two weights (good or bad).
I know everyone says to only weigh yourself once a week, but it has helped me to become better in touch with how different foods effect me.

To calculate how much weight you have lost you really need to weigh yourself once a week. You should weigh yourself on the same day and around the same time (in the same clothes or without) to get an accurate reading. Weight fluctuates throughout the day as well as different times of the month. If you weigh yourself in the morning and then go back in the afternoon you aren't just weighing yourself, but whatever you have put in your body that day, that is why it is best to weigh on an empty stomach first thing in the morning.

With all that said, I am a slave to the scale, I can't resist weighing in every morning, but I only count a loss or a gain one day a week. I usually weigh in on Tuesday mornings for my official weigh in and this is the only figure that I use when getting new clippies or stating my total weight loss.

I weigh myself everyday. I do this because I notice if I'm bad it shows up imediately. It keeps me on track to see my weight. Some days I skip when I'm afraid to get on the scale. I just assume I've gained and don't need to get on(those are the days I'm really good about what I eat).

Hope this helps.

Exactly what Rhonda says except that I wear my undies because I weigh in the laundry room where there is no carpet and I don't want people walking in on me naked. Wouldn't want to have to take an emergency trip to the ER when they pass out. ;-)

I figure my weekly weight loss by subtracting my Sunday weight from the previous Sunday weight. I hadn't thought about averaging, but that would work too. :)

If you do weight everyday, just know that it is going to go up some days. I've never heard of anyone losing every single day. As long as your showing a weekly loss, you're doing a good job. ::yes::

Sometimes you can do everything right and not show a loss. My weight loss really slowed down right after Thanksgiving and I did not cheat at all. I didn't even overeat. I probably did have too much sodium. Things have really picked up the last two weeks though. I've lost more that usual, so it all evens out in the end. :)

I appreciate all the advice I have gotten from each of you. I like the idea of keeping up with what my body is doing on a daily basis by weighing myself but only using one day to be my official weigh in day (Sunday for me). This board is just wonderful and I appreciate all the comments!

Don't over analyze your weight loss.

I weigh myself every morning. However, I record my weight loss every Tuesday. Whatever number I am on Tuesday is deducted from the previous week. That will give you a good number. Each day brings different challanges and you want to be realistic.

Also, once a month, I measure myself. Sometimes you can see minor or major results just by measuring. The scale gives you one view and the measurements give a possible other.

I'm down 33 lbs. but have lost over 24 inches. Some people are just the opposite. More inches and less weight. It depends on your make-up.

Develop a routine and stick to it. That will make your weight loss consistant. Because you do this, you will be able to develop a pattern that can chart your weekly average weight loss, etc.

Remember: The goal is to feel and be better! If that is occurring, the weight loss is insignificant.

I too weigh myself about 4 times a day! It can drive you crazy BUT I have to say it is good incentive!

I usually weigh myself every morning but it is just to see how I'm doing. My official weigh in is Monday morning and yes sometimes I'm up a little from where I was earlier. If that is because of something I ate the day before and I'm holding water so be it I know it will come off easier then. I think the important thing is to have a constant - same day and time each week. If you want to do it in between those times that's great but they shouldn't run your life - that will drive you nuts with up one day and down the next. :D

I log my weight loss in at WW online but I also keep an Excel worksheet with a chart. One page has my weight loss and one page has my measurements (which I haven't done for a while and should). Find what works best for you and stick with it!

I weigh myself once a week first thing in the morning. I would weigh myself once a month if it wasn't for the WISH weekly check-in which I want to be a part of. If I weighed myself more than once a week the ups and downs would drive me crazy  For me I know if I'm doing the right things then the weight will come off, so I am trying not to let it consume my life. I used to be on and off the scale and it really was no good for me. In the long run, I think that we have to do what is right for us. if weighing yourself everyday works for you, then that is what you should do.

I weigh once a week...I'm a big picture person...who cares about the details? :)
