My dad is a huge fan of neutral colors and especially beige, so all the walls in the communal spaces of the house (living room, family room, kitchen, stairs and hallways, main floor bath) have been beige since we moved in nearly 8 years ago. The master bedroom and bath is also beige.

My sister's room started out hot pink, as she was eight at the time, and stayed that way until Dad finally talked her into repainting (there may have been money involved to go beige). My brother's room was beige, then a really, really dark olive--it would be perfect for, say, a dinosaur/prehistoric themed room. Since my brother went off to school, my sister moved into his old room, and she likes the dark colors, so she's kept it.

The kid's bathroom started out lavender, until Dad couldn't stand it anymore and repainted it beige.

My room is actually the only room that hasn't been repainted beige since we moved in. When we moved in, I picked a nice light blue for my room that I still really like, and my parents have graciously agreed to avoid painting it beige until I graduate from college.

As far as decorating goes, we really try to avoid most of it. My dad is insane about protecting the walls, so he doesn't like to hang things on them, unless they're a neutral-colored painting by one particular artist that he picks out. We've switched family room furniture three times in the nearly eight years we lived here, but our living room didn't get furniture at all until five years after we moved in, when I graduated from high school. It took my parents those five years to pick out matching furniture for our living and family rooms. The other day, my dad mentioned something about it maybe being time for new furniture, and my mom and I looked at him like, "What crazy juice did you drink this morning?" There will be no new furniture in our house for the time being. We do have some lovely neutral-colored photo frames, and some end tables and lamps, and a couple other decorative (and neutral-colored) pieces and hangings for our home, but not much. My dad is a big fan of the stark, beige look. He's also crazy about not scratching our wood furniture, so we don't typically put much on our tables/wood furniture, at least not in communal spaces.

We did put in new tile in both upstairs bathrooms this year, which only took my parents about seven years to agree on. Eventually we'll redo our kitchen, which will mean repainting beige. And, since my dad is really concerned about scratching the paint on the walls, he's constantly touching up anywhere that has even an accidental scratch, or a shadow that looks like a scratch, so we do touch up our paint quite often.

One of my best childhood memories is every 2 years my dad would ask what color I wanted my room- and no matter how hideous he thought the color was-if I liked it he painted it that color. I had neon green, neon orange, Blue, neon yellow among other colors. He let me have my own space decorated the way I liked and I loved it!

Some rooms get painted often, like my dining room and powder room( probably about every 3 years) others are one and done. We painted that huge cathedral ceiling family room about 8 years ago and it's staying that way for a while!

I have paint ready o go for the boys bathroom. Then next will be mudroom makeover....again.....
