How often do you eat at a diner?

I didnt know there were not diners in the south!!

We have a lot of them around us but really only go to one.

I agree with a PP...Perkins is no diner! but you can get breakfast there any time of day!

Maybe 2 times a year? Never seem to think of it.

We seem to get take out more from pizza/sub places & that sort of thing.

I may not have the same definition of a diner that some of you do. I'm thinking what Imzadi described, but there isn't any Greek food at the ones around here. More like breakfast, American fare, comfort food, sandwiches, dessert & ice cream. A lot like Friendly's menu now that I think about it.

I thought most diners were owned by Greeks? :confused3 Kind of like most of the street corner delis in NYC are Korean and many of the dry cleaners are owned by Chinese. :confused3

Who owns the bong places? :rotfl:

Anyway, it's not heavily "Greek influenced," just like you wouldn't know the Chinese did your dry cleaning, except they are at the counter. There isn't a lot of Greek dishes at the diners, but the ones I've been to have the traditional gyros, souvlaki, those wrapped rice in grape leaves and moussaka & spanakopita (spinach pies.) And some Greek/feta omelette and a Greek salad to choose from.

There is a 1950's diner near our house and they send us half-off coupons all the time so we go about once a week.

They do have salads, so that I'm not gaining 100 pounds a month.

I've got to know.. what is a 'meat and three'?

A 'meat and three' is a restaurant that usually offers a daily choice between two-three meat options and then your choice of vegetables from among a list of 10-15 options. Sometimes the food is offered cafeteria style where you go down a line or, in my favorite place, they just write the daily choices on a chalk board and you order from there. The meat can be anything like fried chicken, roast beef, meatloaf, etc. The vegetables can be anything but they typically include potatoes-mashed, red, hashbrown casserole, squash casserole, green beans, carrots, stewed tomatoes, greens, etc. But any meat and three worth going to must have fried okra and either a good homemade roll or cornbread. My favorite thing to do is to just by-pass the meat option and go for a vegetable only plate.

If you are ever in Nashville you must try Arnold's Country Kitchen or Barbara's Home Cooking. There are many others but these are two of the best.
