How often do dates open up?

Trying to rent points for a studio stay. One particular night in July is very difficult to find any availability bc of moonlight magic. Yesterday somehow the poly opened up. I put in for a reservation from a rental store. Just got back word that it didn’t work out. I’m assuming at this point anything that opens up will be taken by actual DVC members who don’t have to go through a middle man company. My question is: is it worth still waiting for that date to open up? Does it happen often or was yesterday a fluke? I want to reserve something already but would also love to be somewhere I want to be like the Poly let’s say.

How often do they open up? Only when someone cancels an existing reservation. And once freed-up, those dates can be grabbed by another member or the waiting list process within minutes.

Ok so in your experience and opinion you would just forget waiting and hoping bc going through a rental company it would take too long right? Just spend a few more bucks or go somewhere less desirable?

I don't think rental companies typically deal in hunting for availability and waitlist requests. If there is availability at another DVC resort, you might be able to find a private renter who is willing to book something now and put you on the waiting list for your preferred resort. But even that may be difficult. Members can only have 2 active waitlist requests at a time.

One time we made this work. I stalked an availability site and had a few different private rental areas to search (like the rent/trade here on DIS and the unfortunately now closed *********** board). After finding availability I looked at posts where owners were present and answering back to requests within the last hour. That worked quick enough to secure a reservation.

Talk to someone on the boards who is willing to stalk or waitlist for you. The point rental site isn't going to be willing to do that.

Some of these categories have hundreds of rooms, of course it's possible something opens up.

I have tried renting a hard to get date through one of the rental companies before, and they have never been fast enough to get the room I'm looking for. However, I have had fantastic success with the great folks on the rental board here. I really wanted a Boardwalk studio for a Saturday in September, which is prime F&W Festival time so it was all booked up, and was able to get it through a renter here when the availability site showed a room open.

Thank you all for the advice. I ended up just taking a confirmed reservation that runs through the hard to get date and now I have three days before that to fill up. While you’re giving advice what do you all think…Poly room non DVC or GF DVC studio lagoon view? Almost the same price. Which way would you go?
