How often are paid upgrades available?

We just did a 4-day cruise on Wonder (Nov. 23-27) and paid to upgrade from a Cat. 8 to a Cat. 5 at the time we checked in. The $298 cost (for 2 adults and 2 kids, 3-12) was less than the difference we would have paid if we had reserved a Cat. 5 to begin with.

Does anyone have a sense of how often these upgrades are available and what kind of savings typically are offered? Has anyone regularly employed this as a cost-saving strategy?

Obviously, it's a no-go for a sold out cruise (unless you get really lucky and someone makes a last minute cancellation at the same moment you ask), but I'd be interested to know what the situation is at other times.

Thanks!

you may luck out but be sure that the original cabin you book is one that you will be happy with if there are no upgrades available to purchase. If you have your heart set on a veranda you are better off purchasing one from the get go rather than be dissapointed in the end if none are available. That is what we do every year, does it cost us a lot more $$ - yes. BUT I know I would be very unhappy if I did not have the veranda so it is money well spent.

We just got back as well..Nov 27th-Nov 30th cruise. I paid to upgrade for 298.00. I guess it just depends on if the ship is sold out or not..what is available. Would have been 600.00 to upgrade earlier. Got our verandah and loved it! I don't think I'll chance it again. Can't go without it.

You're just taking a chance. If it doesn't matter, then just try before you board.

Anyone know if it is more on the 7 day then the 3 or 4 day to upgrade?
