How much $$ would you spend on used retired AG Doll?

Now my question is....how much would you spend on a used good condition doll that is retired that you would not have to send off to the doll hospital? How much would you spend on one that DID need to be sent off?

Assuming you wanted Marisol for your daughter's collection, I'd have no problem paying $68 for her. For Marisol, Kailey, Samantha or Nellie, maybe $75 or so as long as all eyelashes were present, hair looked good, and they had their original outfit or another that I wanted at the time. There are tons of Samantha, Molly, & Kirsten dolls out there. Nellie is a better find, as are any DOTYs. At children's consignment/thrift stores $25-$45 seems to be about the average for used dolls where I live.

$75 for a new doll with an "x". X's don't bother me - most of the benefit sale dolls I've seen look perfect - but bad hair, marker, scrapes, holes, and other obvious defects on used dolls, with or without an x, can be a deal breaker.

Lindsey is the most difficult to find right now, I'd pay $100 max for a used Lindsey with orig outfit - but I'd be planning on sending her for a new head eventually as her hair was on the dry side even when new and those curls don't stay nice after brushing/styling sessions with a young owner. I've learned the hard way, after the doll is in my hands, that many people's idea of "my daughter took really good care of her dolls" is different than mine is, especially if this statement is not accompanied by a photo of the back of the hair.

For a doll that needed repair $50 would be my max and ideally that would include shipping.

For one of the original white bodied, signed & numbered dolls, I might go to $300 or so depending upon condition/box/paperwork/extras included. I know many people say there's little difference but you can really feel the quality of the vinyl in some of the earliest pre-mattel dolls - so much nicer than the hard plastic-y feel of today's dolls - it's something so distinctive that even kids can notice the difference when they hold them. For me, that's worth a bit more than the catalog price of a new doll too but still not too much more than new if it's a tan body.

The prices above represent the max I'd pay if I wanted the doll for myself or DDs. They are very close to ebay prices for used dolls. If I were looking for resale items to make a profit I'd probably have to figure no more than half the numbers above...

I emailed AG about the best way to store my daughter's AG dolls, and they told me to contact a local doll expert. Because different areas of the US have different humidity levels and such, they recommend contacting someone local.

We're not too far from you in MD. I keep a lot of our DDs' AG dolls and access in our guest room and DD20 has her dolls boxed for storage on the shelves in her closet. DD9 is still displaying hers in her room. My dolls are in their boxes, untouched in the guestroom closet.

We keep unboxed outfits/accessories filed in rubbermaid stacking file drawers with each doll's name on the outside. Inside the drawer each outfit is able to stand up in its own zip lock bag - open at one end to prevent the fabric from yellowing over time. We keep all items in the living area of our home to avoid dramatic changes in temp/moisture level. So far, it's worked for us but I'm not sure what we'll do with it all when we eventually downsize and move to a smaller place.

wow, what a good idea. When DD gets a bigger collection I will have to keep that in mind.
I don't plan on investing in the dolls to sell them in the future. Its really for DD's play. When she opened it on christmas I told her she had to take REALLY GOOD CARE OF KIT. I set down some rules (don't bring by food, markers, crayons, nail polish, etc. and no cutting hair) and for the most part she is taking good care of her and enjoying her. I want this to be something I put away when she's older and give back to her when she has a lil girl of her own.
