DD13 is in 8th grade at a Catholic school and is in the advanced math class. The class participates in a math competition at a local high school each year. A teacher has run a prep class for them, eight 2hr sessions and there are 20-22 students in the class. The principal (80+yr old nun) has traditionally given the teacher a token gift (think box of candy and gift certificate). Parents in the past have always chipped in cash to give the teacher as a thank you for her time. The competition is Saturday and we've received the email asking for a donation with no recommended amount.
Here's my question - how much would you contribute? What would be the "going rate" for something like this? Our DD is our oldest and we've never been through this before and don't want to look cheap but to be honest funds are pretty tight. DH and I were thinking $50, are we way off base?
