Okay my DBF is having some financial troubles but insisted he had to get something for my birthday. He got me a massage with a lady that is one class away from getting her certification so she can't charge but works off tips. How much money should we tip her?

Sorry I forgot to mention how long it is. It is going to be an hour long massage and she will drive 5 minutes to come to my house. She said that she had some different options that I could choose from like the warming rocks??? I have never received a professional massage before so I am clueless on any of these things!! Thanks for the help.

I would go with fifty at least because usually it costs that much for a half hour!!

Only because the girl does not charge. If you were to pay for an hour massage at the spa I go to you would spend at least a hundred and that is just for the basic massage.

I am a very good tipper and if I can afford it I like to help people out when they need it.:sunny:

$50.00 sounds good to me too. If she was charging the tip would not be that high..but look at it as if you are paying her then 50 is not that much.

That's exactly what my DBF thought. I didn't have a clue what to pay!!!

Anyone have a warm stone therapy massage with details they want to share. That is the massage I Am thinking about getting.

I had a hot stone massage on my last cruise...it was 170.00 and I tipped 30.00. Locally I have had one hour massages for 60.00 and I would tip 20.00.

WOW!!! My girlfriend just finished her massage certification classes and she had to do 10hrs a week.....and it was free no tip or anything.....guess I really got a deal...

Because she's not certified she can't charge you a fee, although you can "tip" her. It works that way here in PA for cosmetologists who are not certified by the state. I would offer at least $20, knowing I could get a half-hour, regular massage for about $50.

I have a friend like Zurgswife...she's not supposed to accept any money, tip or otherwise during her training

Massages at my spa are $75 for an hour for a regular massage, $105 for a La Stone (hot rocks) massage. I tip about 20% for spa services. So, I would tip $15 for a regular massage, $20 for the la stone.

If you're really only supposed to pay the "tip", then $20 should be good. But, I understand that $20 seems "cheap" for an hour long massage. But, keep in mind that that is the deal. She's not certified, so she should only get the tip, which, in my opinion, would be $20. I don't know, that's kind of a tough situation. Do you know where she's being certified? Perhaps you could call up the place and ask what exactly is expected.

Wow, after reading more replies I might have to research some things to make sure she isn't taking the tips "under the table" when she is not supose to. Thanks everyone.

I am currently taking classes for massage therapist certification, and at my school it is written very clearly that we are not allowed to charge for services while we are in training, but we ARE allowed to accept tips. From other schools that I looked into, this seems to be common practice. I think this woman was telling you the truth.

Thanks Jnynohn. Since you are going through the certification right now, how much would you be happy with getting a tip in a situation like this?

Well, I couldn't say exactly since I've only worked on friends and family and wouldn't accept tips from them. If it was someone that was not a close personal friend, I would say about $30 sounds right to me...

Hope this helps, and enjoy your massage!

Jynohn
