How much would you pay for this Mickey Mouse cake? *** Updated pics page 3

The cakes are very adorable. I love buttercream - YUM!!!

Thank you so much for sharing. Do we get to see the birthday boy and girl?

Cakes were very cute. I hope his party was a great success.

As for smash cakes, I'm from NC but have been living in PA for 6 years now. Every 1st birthday party I've ever been to in both states has had a smash cake, including my own and I am in my 30s. Perhaps it is regional...perhaps not. I think it is a great tradition. You only turn 1 once.

When my dd turned one earlier this year, I paid 120 for her cake and smash cake for her party. I also paid another 25.00 for the cake I got from the grocery store on her actual birthday (included free smash cake) for her birthday dinner just with us and grandparents. While I probably won't pay that much for future birthday parties, I feel that your first birthday is special. I didn't mind spending that much for it. Plus, the cake was amazing.

My Mom just emailed me that the lady that made my cake felt so terrible that it was leaning. I told her no biggie, it still turned out great. I was just happy I got it home OK. I was driving so slow and other drivers were giving me the evil eye. Now, I know how the poor little old lady feels that I always zoom around.

HockeyMom, your cakes are gorgeous!!!!!

I agree! HockeyMomNH your cakes are awesome! I wish I was part of your friends and family circle. :)

Thank you so much for sharing. Do we get to see the birthday boy and girl?

Yes! My stupid work decided to block photobucket. I'll post some later when I get home. Obviously, they didn't block the DIS! :cool1:

Here are pics of the b-day kids:

Wow it is cool reading how the rich half lives! My side is this...

I used boxed cake from the grocery store, bake it, and frosted the kids cakes with powdered sugar, melted margarine, and a dash of milk, divided into several small bowls where I added the food colors that matched whatever Disney Design I was frosting on to the 9x11 sheet cake.

Dd's 1st Birthday Party was in the Park. I took Dd's high chair so she could eat her cake with her hands and make the biggest mess she could!! And she did!! and she loved it!!

I started when Dd was turned one, and the last cake I made for Dd was Titanic sinking into the ocean!!

After that she wanted store bought cakes. But even those 9x11 sheet cakes were under $15.00!

Dd never once ask for a better more expensive cake!

OP, such cute pictures! I appears your birthday boy had a blast and it was all worth it!

What's your point? I don't think someone who spends $150 on a cake is necessarily rich. I'm not rich but if I wanted to I could spend $150 on a cake. I never would though because I think that's crazy. Sometimes it's the people who struggle most with money that "blow" money on things like $150 cakes. That's why they have money problems. I don't have money problems because I am smart with my money.

I am in no way speaking about anyone specifically on this board or the OP. I'm not saying that everyone who buys a $150 cake has money problems. It is just from my own observations of people in my life. I know alot of people who complain about bills or being broke but then go out and spend money on frivilous things.

I'm glad you like them OP, but honestly I would not have been happy with the looks of them. She should have smoothed the buttercream better. It can be done easily. The leaning would have done me in. Yes, I can bake & decorate cakes so that's just based on what *I* would have done.

:yay: I'm rich!?!? I had no idea. I'm going to turn in my resignation today! Why the heck do I work full-time if I'm rich?

I had no idea spending $100 on 3 cakes made me rich. $100, not $150, for those keeping track.

I guess I shouldn't tell you I spent $200 on the food for the party.

Believe me, if I knew how to bake or cook, I would have done it myself. Some of us aren't that talented to make cakes ourselves. I should have took a vacation day from work too so I had the time to make all the food & cakes for the party. Or better yet, I shouldn't have had a party at all. What was I thinking?!?!? :sad2:

I'm sorry I even asked the question or shared at this point. Everyone is entitled to their opinions. I guess some don't know how to express them with class.

First: OP very cute pictures of the kids :) Looks like you had a great party :)

Second: I cannot believe that this thread is still going and that is it still going in the mean direction.
The question was simple: how much would you pay for the cake in the picture. If you would pay nothing then leave it be, if you would pay something then state that. I didnt know that the budget board was not only for picking up budgeting information/ideas but also to be subjected to a thorough dressing down if one steps outside other people's budget expectations/limitations.

I spent $120 for my daughter's birthday cake. I'm by no means rich. I'm not poor either and I think I'm a pretty good manager of money, which is why I could spend $120 on a cake without breaking the bank. Perhaps it was somewhat of a frivilous expense, but it was what I wanted. I like the OP don't have the time or the know-how to bake my own cakes. I wanted something special for DD's birthday and that's what I got.

OP, I love the pictures of the kids so cute. I'm glad the party turned out great.

I'm impressed that you only spent $200 on food for a party of 40. The last time we had a party, the food was something like $500. And that wasn't including alcohol.

It's no one's business what you spend on a cake, and for three cakes I don't think $100 is bad at all. Big boring sheet cakes alone are like $30 and you had specially made ones that turned out so cute!

Don't feel that way -as I said before, there are some people that can not accept that your budget is not the same as their budget, so anything not in their budget is obviously frivolous

People are jealous and always talk about how "rich" we are because we go to Disney so often and take 2 vacations a year...I work at home, most often in sweatpants and a tanktop, so i don't have to buy a wardrobe like people who work out of the house, and I don't need to spend a lot on gas to commute
; I don't need daycare, my youngest has his closet full to bursting from all the hand-me-downs. this is all money that we have to spend on things others may say are frivolous

No one is jealous of my vacations when I am tromping though snow to hang clothes on the line in the dead of winter to keep the electric bill down :lmao: They only see the vacation...or in this case, a cake

I personally don't feel you spent enough.

This is your son we're talking about. Have you not seen TLC's childrens birthday party show? $70????? I would imagine your child is worth more than that! Sheesh! Where were the ponies? The band? The disco lights? Did you even have a plane circling overhead with a banner??????

* Just thought I'd throw 'bad mom' into the mix of rich and wasteful. Oh, and teaching, or lack of teaching, your child proper fork etiquette, at age 1, by getting a smash cake. *

sunlover - thank you for sharing, it looks like you had a perfect day for a birthday party!

Enjoy the next years with your children, they will fly by far too quickly!

WOW! Never thought I'd wake up to comments about being taken for a ride and whether a smash cake is appropriate. :rotfl2:

1.) I paid $100 for all 3 cakes pictured. $70 for the Micky cake AND the smash cake was FREE. $30 for the cupcake cake.

2.) She had a problem with the level leaning and offered to give me $20 back. I refused b/c I would have tipped her anyway and I thought she did a great job. It slid when she put it in the box.

3.) I know it is nothing like the picture in the first post. I didn't want fondant b/c it doesn't taste good so the pictures were to give her an idea. I told her to run with it. This is a lady that bakes cakes for fun, not a business.

4.) Babies play with their food. Smash cakes is for them to dig in and get messy and eat. Just like they eat pasta with their fingers and make a mess. Again, the smash cake was FREE. I didn't pay extra for it. I wanted chocolate so he wasn't full of red / blue frosting.

A local bakery quoted $150 so I don't think I got "taken for a ride."

Thanks for your opinions. :)

My son had a great 1st b-day.

All the guests LOVED and RAVED about the cake. It was delicious.

I had 60 guests and most of the cake was gone so I had to buy that big of a cake. I probably could have got a huge sheet cake from Sam's, maybe 2 for about 1/2 the price. But it would not have tasted as good and wouldn't have been as cute. (IN MY OPINION, OF COURSE)

I think the cake is adorable! And, I love smash cakes for a baby's first birthday. Both of my sons had them...one smeared icing all over himself (literally) and my oldest didn't like the feel of the icing at first but then got used to it. Makes for cute pics!

I think it's sad that you have to explain your reasoning on why you did what you did and why you spent what you spent for your baby's party. You were only asking for pricing opinions and that's all.

Glad to hear the cake was a success and your baby had a fun time smashing his cake!!!

The cakes you got were adorable, and the pic are so cute of your kids enjoying their day. Happy birthday to Mason and Abby.
