How much would this house cost where you live?

Around here no one wants a house that is 100 years old. For the same size a new house would got for about $480,00, but that house would only bring around $200,000.

Wow! 87.5K? I am definately living in the wrong area. That house would go for at least $450K and probably more depending on if the inside has been recently updated. It is probably closer to $500K northwest of Boston. Prices are falling here though and houses are staying longer on the market.

I tried to find a picture of a house in the $500k range here, but there are none. :lmao: Highest price I could find was a big farm selling at $370K, but I think it was mostly because of the land (20+ acres).

I don't mean to be offensive by asking this, but how does anyone afford homes at those prices??? My husband makes a very nice salary, and although I don't work, we live fairly well. Even when I do start working, I can't imagine how we'd afford to live in a $500K house!

Generally speaking, wages are higher in areas where there's a higher cost of living.
In my state we've got a real problem with lack of affordable housing. The average rent and mortgage costs is more than twice the median income here. People find ways to afford it though - there's been an increase in foreclosures because people are taking on a lot more than they can afford thanks to low interest rates. I know a lot of house poor people.

In other areas, like where my brother lives (Nantucket), people rent out rooms because that's the only way they can afford something. My brother is currently looking for a house/condo/bungalow and can't find anything at all under $500,000. I mean nothing. He and his girlfriend live over the garage of her parents' house in an in-law apartment. That's pretty common there.

How big of a lot? I know that it gave the size, but that means nothing. :rotfl: Is it 1/2 acre, 3/4, etc? Or you can describe it like a "normal" subdivision lot with the houses close, or more spread apart, etc I know there's a picture, but it's kind of hard to see how far the house are from each other. Also, how updated are the kitchen and baths? The one car garage would hurt the price around here, at least for a house that big.

If it's a real nice sized lot, I'd guess 400K, but that's if there's been some updating. It would be a lot more for a newer house. It's impossible to compare a house like ours because ours is much newer--9 years, in a neighborhood, 2 car garage, 3 1/2 baths, but with close neighbors. However, it is worth a lot more than I think that house would go for unless that house has a lot of land.

The only reason we can afford our house is because we bought it before it appreciated. There's no way we could afford it now.

in our area you could get a house like that for 150-200k... no one wants to pay that much for a house that is 100 yrs old. I wouldn't!!! I'd build new for about the same price! And probably lower interest rate mortgage too!

T&B, I have no idea the acres. Nobody in my town ever measures by acres -- they just do that in the country.

There's a good amount of yard between it and the house on the left side of the picture, and as you can see it's on a corner lot. Personally, if I bought it, I'd tear down the small garage behind it and just put in a paved driveway. The yard behind the house is really nice sized. You can see a bit of a house behind it. That house is on the other corner of that half-block, right next to an alley.

I think it's about 1/8 of an acre

Wow, in certain areas here you would pay over a million for that. And then some people would do extensive reno. I don't know how people pay for them. I can't imagine having such a massive mortgage. I wouldn't sleep at night. I have a 1 bdr condo that is about 615 sq ft and it would sell for about 350K. Good news is that isn't nearly what I paid for it!

Our town only has one subdivision, so these older houses and neighborhoods don't really compete for sales.

This is a pretty desireable neighborhood to live in, and unfortunately, the house will be long gone by the time we're ready to buy. :(

It's $87,500.

We're looking to spend around $100K, and that ought to buy us a BIG ol' house!
 OMG!!! where i live you can't even buy a tiny, nasty, old, run down, one bedroom condo for $87,000. even the nastiest one bedroom is over $100,000.

Interesting thread! Here in the Avenues area of Salt Lake City (just like the neighborhood you describe), this would be on the larger end of the houses available. It would probably go for $500k easy, maybe up to $700k depending on condition and how high up the bench it is.

There is only a 1 car detached garage and 2 bathrooms so that will negate the price of a "6 bedroom house".

I would say you are looking at 120,000 tops, here.

T&G,

60x80 lot = 4,800 sf = .11 acres so closer to a tenth of an acre.

But i imagine that house would go similar to houses in Rockville's historic area (since there are some there similar in architecture and lot size)

So probably $450~500K or more

what part of west virginia is this house in ???
