How much Water does one MAN Need???

There is a difference here.
Individuals don't have to have gasoline to live.
As for housing, food, clothing, etc, there is no shortage of these items. People that don't have them don't have them because they cannot afford them.

This guy is using up a resource that at the moment there is very little of that most people can afford. Plus, it is being rationed while the other things are not.
Water is a necessity to live. You have to have drinking water. You also have to have water to bathe in and keep things clean or germs and disease can spread.

This is my thought too. Either this or he has spinkler hoses buried just underground that may be constantly running.

ITA!
While I am mostly liberal, I lean on the conservative side.
But, I don't subscribe to any political party.

I think you're wrong on the majority of American conserving. Hello? SUV's anyone? Plus, I know of very few people that either carpool or take public transportation. Just about every vehicle I pass during rush hours have only 1 person in them.
In my house, we have changed the temp before, but it hardly ever happens because it's never thought of by my dad. And I know of no one who actually does this at all.
Most people will buy better light bulbs, and turn out lights. They might recycle if it's convieinent (it's not in my area). But most people won't do anything if it's not convienent enough or to their liking.

.

For some people, (many people) carpooling or public transportation is out of the question. DH works at 3 different hospitals and his schedule is completely unpredictable. I have friends that work in insurance and they often put in 2 hours of OT per day, due to the work load or sudden changes in office demands. I have replaced the light bulbs that are on most of the time with the compact flourescents. These however are not without risks. Most people I know who heat their homes with oil are definately conserving and have been for several years. My house temp has never been above 70 degrees. Recycling? Its required and the dumpsters that we are allotted would not be big enough to contain trash and recycleables.
With regard to SUVs, the gas mileage isn't any different than minivans. People get the type of vehicle they need for their families.

Have you now! ? :rotfl2: Of course because it started during the Nixon years, still makes Carter the worst president in modern history, and I was a registered democrat then.

I think the worst President in modern history is up for debate, and I'm thinking BWB has a good chance of winning the title.

As a kid in the 70's I remember the long gas lines. It was crazy, but necessary at the same time.

I think as a rule, anytime we can conserve resources it's a good thing. I try to do my best, and I know that there's always room for improvement.

The thing about the guy in GA is that the message he sends is that he doensn't care and the rules/regulations don't apply to him. Also, who cares about society, he's just concerned about himself. Uggh, I just can't stand people with that mentality.

People get the type of vehicle they need for their families.

People usually get the vehicle they want, not what they need, regardless of family. It's like that in just about any segment in our society. Look at what goes for a home nowadays. "The bigger it is, the better it is", mentality is everywhere you look in this country. I have to admit I find the Cadillac Escalade to be a beautiful vehicle and I have drove one. It's sweet ride and I could have bought a beautiful pre owned model at a decent price, but it just wasn't needed. Common sense and being economical overcame my desire to be a selfish glutton.

It would only be selfish gluttony if you were depriving your family members of what they needed. I drive a Cadillac CTS and I don't feel selfish at all. I also have a decent sized home. Its what we need to feel comfortable and bigger than what I grew up in.

.

Frankly, I think GWB will go down as a very good president. One that recognized a serious threat and had the will to deal with it.

And that threat was...

the Constitution.

No, it is the truth, but then, I have a hard time believing that you were ever a Republican, so we are even.

I was being a bit smart with that post and should have put in a ;) , because I do believe in the that you were once a Democrat. People change, their opinions can change based on their life experience, the facts that they are exposed to and the way they interpret those facts.

Do you *need* something bigger than what you grew up in? Or do you want? There's a big difference there.

The truth is, most people don't NEED gas guzzling SUVs or minivans. They want them. I'm sorry, but that's the truth. Two kids can fit just as easily in a Camry.

I personally don't carpool to work because my hours aren't consistent, and the public transportation in the Atlanta area is impractical for most people. But... my car gets (supposedly) 38 mpg, so I'm doing what I can and don't have to feel too guilty about it.

That's really the issue behind this guy. It's not just that he's wasting a vital resourse, although that is a huge issue-it's the mentality behind it. That mentality is ALL over these days, just take a visit to the Theme Park boards and you'll see all the complaints about the selfishness of other guests. We're coming up on the big shopping season and we'll see more of it at the malls. The American mindset is becoming more and more "it's all about ME!!!". Whether it's water, gasoline, electricity or a good viewing spot at Mickey's Christmas parade, our society is full of folks who refuse to consider the feelings or the needs of others.

Conservation doesn't have to be draconian. We're a BIG country, and if each family took a few small steps it would make a difference. I do drive an SUV, it gets 21 mpg- but I don't drive it excessively. I work at home at least one day a week and the truck stays in the garage.(my goal is to go full time at home, just have to convince my manager!) I have energy efficient appliances, almost all my bulbs are energy savers and I recycle every thing I can. My life certianly isn't hampered by ANY of that.

I don't want to hijack the thread, so we can agree to disagree. It will be interestig to see the historical spin (on both sides) once GWB leaves office.

Now back to the topic. The GA guy is selfish, bottom line.

I think as a society we have "wants" and "needs" and some people believe that their wants are actually needs. This isn't being addressed to any posters on this thread, it is just an observation in general. I could list many examples in my own family of someone using the term "need" and actually it's a want.

I totally agree.

Good point and while we might have strayed a bit on the topic I think the SUV mentality fits in well with this pig of man using all that water. When I was looking at vehicles recently and walked past a row of pre owned/used SUV's, the question in mind was, do people really need these? Is it necessary? I sat in a couple of them and was impressed by all the features/comforts and the inside of Escalade was nicer than some people's homes. As much as it was a beautiful truck, I couldn't justify owning it and would feel really guilty about using that much fuel in order to feed my ego. Lets be honest here, that's what some of those vehicles are about because if you don't have a large family, why would you need something like that? It seems we have been super sizing everything in America and it just isn't our food portions either. It's our vehicles, homes, pools, shopping malls, vacation destinations, sports arenas, you name it, we super size it. I think the current motto today is, If isn't big and can't be a status symbol, then it must suck.;)

For the record, I'm not jealous of the person who owns a 6000 + sq foot house or the mom of two kids driving around in a SUV the size of a small tropical island. It's your money and your right to do so. I just think that America would be better off with a little more moderation and little less super sizing. The man who this thread is about, is living proof of how we as nation have went off track.

I think the GA man is the exception. If he wasn't, he wouldn't have made the news. Its sad that you see owning an SUV the same as consuming 2000 gallons of water a day during a drought as the same thing. :sad2:

I really don't understand you at times. I never implied driving a SUV was the same as consuming 2000 gallons of water a day. I did however say that it seems to be part of growing segment of our culture that seems to think that what they want is a "need" and the heck with everyone around them. Yes, driving a huge gas guzzling SUV, when a smaller vehicle will do, is your right as a American. Is it in the best interests of America, that BTW, has a serious dependency of foreign oil? Is building a monstrous size house that consumes way too much water and power to operate it, good for the community it's in or the country in general? I think most reasonable, intelligent people would say NO. The "let them eat cake mentality" that this man and others like him have is really getting old. See Dawn, of the many differences between you and me is. That I realize just because I can do something, doesn't necessarily mean I should. Just because you can be a glutton or afford to be one, doesn't make it all right. You being a person who believes in the bible, isn't gluttony and greed on all levels supposed to be sins? Are they not the preverbal 7 deadly sins your religion speaks of?:sad2:

I wasn't going to add this, but what you posted last night kind of bothered me and it got me thinking. Especially after reading your thread a few weeks ago that you made in order to defend yourself, against what you felt was misconceptions about you. I was wondering how people here would know all that information about you.

http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=1622924

When I was talking about how nice a lot of those SUV's are and while I won't buy one, I could see some finding them attractive. The Escalade I saw was a beautiful truck, but just way too wasteful and over the top for my tastes. For some reason you responded back that you own a Cadillac CTS and I just didn't get why you had to add that to the conversation. It made me feel uncomfortable because it felt like you wanted to make sure that I knew you had a Cadillac. Good for you that you have nice things, but I was raised not to talk about certain things in a public manner, what a person makes and has in material possessions, was a few of those things. I would appreciate if you refrain from doing that type of behavior in any future responses directed toward me. You're free to tell the entire DIS boards what you have and how good you got it, but in fairness though, don't act surprised when others don't share your same enthusiasm and call you out on it. Some might call what you do, a form of bragging in a nonchalant, back door type of way. My gut feeling tells me that in many ways you enjoy the attention you receive, good and bad, and you seem to thrive on it. I prefer to be left out of that type of behavior, if you wouldn't mine. Thank you for your time and attention in this manner.

First of all, I do NOT consider myself a GLUTTON.
Secondly, I do not apologize for what we have and work hard for. I posted that I have a Cadillac because you expressed some "guilt" that you would presumably feel if you bought one. I do not feel guilty that I have a Cadillac..or an SUV. I do not feel guilty for what we have or what we spend. We stimulate the economy and provide jobs for workers, just like every other American who engages in the free market economy.
Thirdly, I posted the other thread because there are those who love to engage in back stabbing and gossip on another board, spread disimformation and lies, for whatever reason. They are often the very same people who hold everyone else to a high standard while they are groveling in the gutter. I hope that answers your question.

Edited to add, I am "flattered" that you are wasting your time trying to "understand" me. You don't need too. I am not trying to figure you out. I am just discussing what interests me.

This is probably what water guy thinks to himself as he's using 2,000 gallons a day. :rolleyes1

There is no comparison!

I dunno. Consuming mass quantities of water without guilt when there's a water shortage versus consuming mass quantities of oil without guilt when there's an oil shortage (coming).
