Sorry again to be off topic...davidsprincess...Not only did my DS give me "the talk" :rotfl2: I even had to promise not to wait until they leave for the park so I could sneak into their room to clean it....jc

Have fun on your trip, Disneyanajc!

I am not sure I agree with this statement. I think in nicer hotels it is quite customary to tip housekeeping.

Ah. Well, I never stay at the nicer hotels. I'm just a holiday inn type of gal. When we go to Disneyland we stay at the Anaheim Plaza or Anabella. At WDW we stayed a POR.

Oh, and we leave the "do not disturb" sign up the entire trip so housekeeping never comes in.

While you are in Disneyland there should be NO TIME for cleaning/tidying up your room. After waking up you are required to immediately brush teeth, wash face, use bathroom, change clothes and head out the door to stand in line for rope drop! To do anything else (like making your bed) is sacrilegious! :thumbsup2

We have never tipped--I just never heard of doing that! I use to be a maid (just after high school--and the summer before college) and I would have never taken money left out in the rooms.:confused3

We only stay at the resort hotels--DLH or GC. Next time I will leave a tip.

We always tip 20% at a restaurant and so forth.

I have to say, as a person that waited tables and earned tips and really valued my tips, I can never figure out all the other tipping! I am ashamed to say I have not tipped housekeeping appropriately! Well, I am a new and informed person now, and will make up for it! I promise!

But hey, I am still not tipping a buck for those outrageously overpriced coffee drinks!

I have to admit I have never tipped housekeeping either! And it is not that I don't want to. I think, for some reason, I just never thought of it! It is easy to remember to do it when the people are right there in front of you - like waiters and waitresses or bell staff - but when I don't see the people, I just blank out about it.

However, I had just thought the other day that I want to make sure to tip the PPH HK staff this time when I go in October, and I was told by someone else that another protocol people sometimes follow is to save the tipping for when you leave the hotel. On the morning you check out, you leave your tip for them to find, covering each day of your whole stay, rather than leave a tip each day. I wouldn't have known what was better to do since I never did it, but I heard that this is done as well!

Right. Me too! Never tipped at any of the hotels! A dollar per person almost seems too little to leave IF you are going to leave anything. 20% seems too much. But the person I just asked about it the other day (who said that typically she leaves a tip at the END of her stay, on the morning of check-out) said that it is not UNCOMMON to leave a good $20 for HK when you check out. Hmmm..... I don't know.

Ok, I must be a horrible person...I have never tipped housekeeping! I had no idea you were supposed to! I did tip the people that helped with my baggage both when we got there and when we checked out though. I have never stayed at a way nice hotel, we stayed at Hojos this last time and it was nice to us! Now I feel bad :( I guess I better tip them next time!

Well, I guess a few of us here are also 'horrible people'! Just kidding! We all neglected to tip! Tipping the bell guy is easy to think of because he is standing right there and they expect it. But we rarely see Housekeeping!

I would assume that erring on the side of caution is best, and anyone you think MIGHT need a tip, leave a tip or hand them a tip. BUT that can add up if you are watching your pennies. I used to work at a secretarial service where we typed things for clients who would come in and pick them up. Sometimes the work was easy, sometimes it was tough. In the entire 14 years I was there, I think I got tipped by maybe three clients. I never expected it, but when I got the tips, I felt grateful because I worked hard. Sometimes certain clients would come in and bring little gifts and things so that was nice but I never expected it.

I would worry that the person who cleans the last day is not the person who cleaned my room all the other days and might not want to share their "windfall". (not knocking you, just a thought that I have:flower3: )

I have never tipped either, and now I feel bad. I think $1-2/day/person is reasonable. After reading meaning of these posts, I was kinda wondering to myslef, "when would be the best time to tip?" daily vs. at the end of the stay. I can see the pros both ways. But this last post just answered it for me, you more than likely will not have the same house(mouse)keeper each day. It also will save my toothbrush daily!!

No, you are right. It is a good point. And it wasn't my idea. I haven't been tipping at all! I have been completely ignorant to the fact that I was supposed to! It was something someone else told me they did, and someone else on this thread posted the same info about leaving the tip at the very end of the stay! But if this is something that people commonly do, then the HK staff might realize they have to split it at the end. I mean, I suspect that many people don't tip at all, so if someone wants to leave a big fat $20 bill on the morning of check-out for a room that only had two people for two nights, then I think that is better than not leaving anything! But I will try to leave a little something each morning before we head out into the parks. We are only staying two nights, checking in on a Friday, so technically, if I leave a tip on Saturday morning, then am I tipping them for work they have not done yet, because the people who stay in my room before me would have tipped them on Friday?! Now, Sunday morning when we check out, that makes sense to tip them because they will have already cleaned up our room on Saturday. It is a fuzzy area, so that's why I say, I guess, err on the side of caution and just tip even when I am not sure, I guess! Or just leave the Do Not Disturb sign out all the time.

Just my take on Tipping...This after many years traveling with my DH and his job...we have stayed in so many Hotels...Motels and Inns all over CA and beyond...
Again just my take... tipping housekeeping…there are no hard or fast rules…Housekeeping is going to clean your room tip or no tip (this is their job)…it is not expected…but like any service position appreciated…If you do decide to leave a tip it would be best to do it daily…reason…shift change…day off… it is nice to leave the tip for the person who cleaned the room...

When I worked in a hotel (about 5 years ago though) Housekeeping said that they usually rec'd $1 per bed. NOw of course sometimes they would receive a big tip ($10-20). I usually follow that rule. If I feel like I rec'd excellent service I leave a bigger tip! Now, at that hotel they switched rooms every day, so the person getting the tip may not have been the person cleaning the room. But, every hotel is different. That settles it,I had planned a nice thank you at the end of our stay but want to make sure the right staff gets it. I am gonna call mousekeeping at DLH and find out...(pause for phone call...)Okay I'm back . After speaking with an extremely inpatient and rude front desk person at DLH I was switched to Mouskeeping. The woman I spoke with (Maria) said that each Mousekeeper has the same rooms unless they are on their day off ,in which case someone else cleans it. i told her why I was calling and she suggested either leaving a tip each day, or upon checkout leaving the mousekeepers name on an envelope (with tip) at the front desk. That way the right person is sure to get it!Good idea! Oddly I don't know if this was much help. HOpe so!!:confused3

How would we know the name of the person if we don't see them? Well, I will play it by ear when I get there in October. If I have some smaller bills, I will leave something each day. Again, I am only there from mid-day Friday to Sunday morning, and only two nights are involved, so it won't be a fortune I give them. If I don't have anything smaller, I will just leave the whole tip at the front desk when we check out.

I guess if you don't see person you could call front desk and ask who is your mousekeeping staff for your room. I would not leave a large amount either for a few nights!:confused3

On one of the gazillion podcasts I listen to, one of the hosts was a former castmember that used to clean rooms at one point, and he said the same thing as a PP, that because of days off, etc., the person at the end of your trip may not be the same one as the one at the beginning, if you're saving it to the end of your trip. On the other hand, I've stayed at a hotel where it said ON the tipping envelope provided BY the hotel, to leave a tip "at the end of your stay" and they left the SAME envelope in the room w/the person's name on it, for the 2nd night. In the case, we left it the 3rd morning (2nd night). So.... dunnow what I'll do this trip.

I tip when I request something extra. For example, I will leave a note asking for extra towels and will leave $1 per towel requested.
