how much to pay neighbor to mow our grass?

My DH is away this week and when I told the neighbor that our grass needed mowing he offered for his teenage son to do it. He's going to use our mower and gas. How much should I pay him? We paid someone to mow and edge once and it was $40 - but they used their own gas and mower. I was thinking $25 maybe. Does that sound right?

Not sure how long it takes to mow. I think we have around .39 of an acre so it's not huge. It's bermuda grass if that makes a difference.

It's really hard to say - without being able to see the size of your yard; if it's flat or hilly; if you expect edging to be done too; etc..

Was the person you paid $40 a professional (mowing service)? If so, I would probably pay this person the same - or maybe $5 less..

We have .33 acres and the going rate is $45 for each cut. I haven't found anyone to cut it for less. Neighbors pay the same.

We have almost 1/2 acre and the kid that mows for us and uses our riding mower and our trim mower with our gas gets $40. He doesn't do the really close trim. It takes him an hour and a half. My husband does the close trim in deference to my flowers, lol.

He's doing you a favor. He's your neighbor. It's hotter than Hell. Give the kid $30 to cut the grass, and let your DH weedeat when he gets home.

$25 sounds more than fair for what is an hour or less of work I'm guessing.

My mom just switched professional gardeners, she has a 1/2 acre of grass with a brick border and the new guy wants $90 a month to do it all with his equipment. So that's $22.50 a week for comparison purposes.

I live near you and my lawn mower is broken. The kid across the street charges $20 when he just mows and $25 when he trims, too.

I'm a sucker for kids ans so tend to overpay them.

I'd probably give him $30 or $40.

He did a good job with the yard. He didn't edge or trim - but then I didn't ask him to. I asked around at work too and in the end gave him $20. He seemed really pleased with it. And his Dad said I didn't need to pay him.

Definately! The Dad even emailed to ask if it looked good and if he needed to have his son touch up anything.

We paid $25 per cut to teens, 60 x 100 lot, with a large area taken up by a mulched swingset and a shed. No edging.

Aw, that's awesome. Looks like your instincts were right on - I think $20 is fine, possibly supplemented with a cold drink and cookies on occasion.
