i have a 9mo old and will be needing a sitter, basically a back up for when my inlaws go on vacation and such. the older lady, which is a family friend, will be coming to my home approximately three days a week, for approximately 5-6 hrs a day. thanks in advance.

My current job is a babysitter for a family with 3 children. I'd say around $10 an hour. It is just one child but they are an infant and require "extra" work.

I think fees are largely regional. I am in NJ and all the sitters here--no matter their age---get @ $10/hour.

I'm always puzzled by these threads, actually----don't you ask the sitter how much they charge? :confused3

acutally, i did ask and she said that she did not know because she has not babysat for some years.

I'd say at least $10. I had a 19 girl from Mexico watch my twins when they were babies, and I payed her $10 (I don't know why, but people here tend to pay less if a sitter doesn't speak English).

Good lord I need to charge more money!
I live in PA and I only charge $7 an hour for 3 kids(siblings), ages 4 months old, 3 y.o. and 6 y.o.!
I have my A.A.S. in ECE/EI and have been caring for others children since I was 14...so 21 years experience!

did you report her income paid on your taxes? shame!!!

seriously.. here we have paid either 9 or 10.

We ask them upfront and state what we want to pay. Also, that if I'm home by a certain time (6pm, then we will pay 1.5 hours instead of rounding to the full hour for 6:30pm).

They'v eall been ok with it. Its been a while though sicne last yr when our last babysitter left for college.

My DD (13) is baby sitting 5 year old twin boys today and is getting paid $10 an hour. She has also babysat twin 10 yr olds and was paid $200 for 5 days, 9-4:30. Of course she hardly had to do anything with the 10 yr olds. She sometimes gets one of her friends to help. When she does, they charge the same and just split the money. But, she never tells the people how much she charges, she just accepts whatever they want to pay. Most of the people she sits for are family friends. It is amazing how much people pay for a sitter these days. We don't allow her to babysit children under the age of yet.

If you come to their house, you should be paid at least $10 or $12. However, if they're in your home, that sounds fair.

Around here it would be $20-$25/day. We are in So. IL. I can't believe the outrageous prices people can get for babysitting. $10 an hour would never happen around here. A lot of people don't make much more than that at their job...they wouldn't even be able to afford to work.

You really think an adult is going to come to your house and make $3 - $4 an hour?! :scared1: That's crazy! What would be the incentive? :confused3 Now, if the baby was dropped off at the sitters house, where she could get stuff done around the house during naps, take in other kids, that would be less.

When I borrow my friend's professional nanny, she gets 12.00 an hour . For over nights it is a flat rate of 100.00 a night.

My teenage sitter gets 7 an hour .

I think 10.00 an hour is standard for a baby at home around here.

When my DS8 was a baby he went a family friend who watched two other older kiddos and her own. I paid 18.00 a day, I think she is up to 25.00 a day for babies now. I let her take him to run errands with her when she didn't have the other kids so it was a good deal for her.

Would an older lady do that for that amount of money? Yes, and I know lots of people that would probably do it for free. They would probably love to come over and spend all day with a baby. I'm sure she's not in it for the money. OP if you can afford to pay $10/hour go for it. I"m just saying that would never happen around here...unless you were somebody rich.

I babysit after school for a 4 year old and get paid $15/hour. When I started, they offered me $14/hour, which was a lot more than I expected. Then last year, they raised it to $15/hour. I pick him up from school and play with him, load or unload the dishwasher, and fold clothes if they leave them out for me.

I guess I am really lucky to make that much, but they think they are lucky to have found someone with so much experience(I am a teacher) who loves their child.

My friend pays her teenage sitter $20 an hour for her potty trained 2.5 year old and 18 month old. I posted on here and although everyone agreed that was outrageous, she can not find anyone any cheaper. All the teenagers she has talked to charge that.

When she had a nanny/ day care type situation, she paid $75 a day (probably 8a-5p) for one baby and then $115 a day when she had #2. She shared this nanny with her cousin who also paid $75 a day for her one baby a couple months older than my friend's oldest. They used the nanny from the time the oldest was 3 months to about 2 years. This was in the cousin's house.

WOW!!! $20/hr. is a LOT of money for babysitting. My 15yo DD gets $10/hr. and I think that is a lot for 1 child. I am a mom of 3 kids, an RN who is CPR certified with experience in critical care and school nursing and I would happily babysit for $20/hr. HMMMM maybe I need a career change!

It is a problem. Around here a neighbor wanted to go back to work, but she is making min. wage. The babysitters were between 8 and $10 per hours, so it cost her to work.

She should find an in-home daycare situation. Those are usually a lot less. You can't expect someone to come into your home to watch only your kids for $8/hour if it is a regular thing. That is their job too.
