I haven't been to a baptism in years and the last one was for my husband's goddaughter. We have one later today and I am just planning on giving a card with money but don't know what's appropriate

What denomination/church is she being baptisted in? I know in the Baptist church we don't give gifts.

I've never heard of giving money for a Catholic baptism. I'd just give the card.

For my godson I gave a 500.00 bond. For other kids I give between 25-50 depending if they are a friend or a relative. My daughter got mostly checks for hers but she also got a few savings bonds too. I've never heard of going without a gift and just giving a card, I know everyone that came to my daughters got her something.

$25-$50, depedning on the relationship.

If you want to get a bond, you can spend $25 and it will ultimately be worth $50.

25 tops. the problem is people keep asking others what they give and soon everybody is giving 50 or 100 and that is hard to afford for every single special occassion.

really? A few people gave my kids religious type gifts like a picture of Jesus to hang on the wall etc. My Mom gave the boys each a personalized Bible with the family history filled out.

I've never heard of cash gifts for a Baptism.

Never give money, unless family is hurting. I give books (like a Children's Bible or parables.) If I can find some kind of Jesus-type toy, I'll get that.

Most of the cash gifts we got were in the $25-$50 range.

Am about to become Godmother again and have to shop myself!

Good luck! :)

Thanks everyone... we are giving $25. The reason I am giving cash is that I know they have an account established for him already.

We are about to head out the door :)

I'm also a Southern Baptist, and I've never heard of gifts going along with baptism. As a Baptist, a gift seems wrong . . . kind of like the material aspect takes away from the spiritual focus of the day. However, I am aware that the Catholic Church's traditions are different -- not better or worse, just different.

I'd lean towards a savings bond for the future. The personalized Bible idea is very nice, but you'd want to make sure that no one else is doing the same thing -- no need for two! A cross necklace would also be nice. I would absolutely stay away from birthday-type gifts: no clothes, games, etc.

I just went to a baptism today (well, christening, but it's the same thing right?). Catholic as well. We gave $75, but it was for my cousin. I'd say $25-50 would be appropriate. So, you'll be fine. Hope you have a good time. :thumbsup2

We usually give a $100 savings bond.

This is exactly what I was thinking.

I am going to a Baptism on Sunday for triplets. A friend I haven't seen in years but do keep in contact with. I bought them clothes I hope that is ok.

Around here (Philadelphia area) everyone seems to give money/bonds as gifts. I usually give between $25-$75 depending on the relationship. Usually I'll put the money into a bond-- so if I give $25-- I'm giving a $50 bond. We received mostly bonds for our sons. A few people did give gifts, a picture frame, someone gave a blanket-- but most gave cash or bonds. We're not hurting financially-- its just what people do in this area.

I think parents of triplets would love getting clothes!

Thats how it is in NY too. No one gave gifts like games, religious things or clothes...just bonds, checks, cash (which all went right into her college fund account) and her godmother gave her a gold chain with a gold K on it for her name.

I would say cash or savings bonds also. I wouldnt go with a cross since there is a good chance the god parents are buying it.

My 2 youngest are being christened in 2 weeks. We are keeping is small sicne their birthday party is 3 weeks after that. They have the same set of godparents and each one is buying 1 cross.
