a friend of mine's teenage dd to tutor my dd in math?

My dd (8) has struggled in the past with math. So we are going into to 3rd grade with supports in place to help her.

My friends dd (16) has agreed to tutor my dd on Tuesday afternoons. If dd needs more than we can add time.

But I have no clue how much to pay her!

I cannot afford to take dd to sylvan (I refuse to take out a student loan to help dd pass 3rd grade and put us into debt) or other places like that. DDs teacher and I are working together so what I do at home compliments what goes on in the classrrom.

So what is the going rate these days for teenage tutors?

I would charge $10.

Honestly, it's not like 3rd grade math will be difficult for the 16yo and I feel you are paying her more for her time than the actual work content. Maybe I'm being a little cheap?

I paid $45 an hour for a French tutor last year. She is a professor. I think I would pay the teen $20 an hour or better yet ask her.

$10 seems fair to me too; between $10-$15/hour is what student tutors here at my university make. I guess it also depends on what you expect of the tutor; are they going to just sit down and go over assignments and homework, or do you want the tutor to think of creative ideas that might help your daughter? If it's the second scenario, I would probably pay more towards $15. You could even use that hour to pop out and do some errands

Babysitters around here make $10 an hour, so I would think $15-$20 an hour would be fair since it's only 3rd grade math. My only concern with a teenager is that you want to make sure she's teaching it the right way. There are so many different ways to do math and if she teaches her a different method than the teacher she'll end up more confused.

I have asked her - she doesn't know. LOL.

I will probably give them stuff to do during the hour. I would not ask the teen to come up with something. It is more just to have my dd work with someone other than mom on her math. (Not that we won't be working together on it.)

I will probably start around the $10 range and see from there.

In my area adult (college & older) tutors get $40/hour. I would think a teen should get $15-$20/hr.

My teen daughter has done some tutoring....3rd, 4th and 5th grade, mostly math.
She has never set a price for tutoring, she asks the parents what they are offerring.
She has always been paid $20 or $25/session.....with a session lasting about 90min.

Wanted to add one more thing.......

One thing that my daughter has always done as a tutor....
Especially working with kids as young as 3rd grade...She would always take the child a little gift (think Dollar Store stuff.....little 100 piece puzzle, a necklace, stickers, glowsticks....that kind of stuff) and keep it in her purse until the end of the session. If the child stayed on task, and cooperated the entire session, getting all of their work done, before she left she would give them their reward. The kids would quickly catch on that if they paid attention, and really learned....they would get a surprise.

Since she was being well paid for her time, she said it was the least she could do. And it helped her keep the kids motivated !!

Now your tutor might not do that, but you might want to consider doing it. Sometimes its hard for kids to stay focused outside school, and pay enough attention to a teen to really get anything out of their tutoring sessions......so it might help!
