How much outgoing mail can you put in your mailbox?

I lived in a town (Arlington, MA) once where all mailboxes were either attached to the house or were letter slots in the door. at least the part of town I lived in, the mail carrier did not pick up outgoing mail. Its the only place I ever lived that the mail carrier didn't. DH said it was because the mail carriers walked their route as opposed to driving in a truck. not sure if that is the case but it made sense. when we moved to a less city-like town, we had mail pick up. dh didn't trust pickup for years because he grew up without it and was shocked everytime I would put something out and they would take it. lol.

Yes, I lived right next door to you in Somerville for many years, before we moved out to a rural area. We had mail slots instead of a mailbox as well & the mail carrier was also on foot. We also had a public mailbox on my walking route to the T, so I used to put all my outgoing mail there.

I think there are people who don't realize the differences in cities and countries.

What is funny?

I thought that was a weird response as well. :confused3 In addition to these differences, I rarely mail things. Our bills are paid online, I use email & Facebook for most written correspondence with friends & such, & I am still in the habit of mailing Christmas cards & packages directly from our local post office. Any "business" or important mail that does need to be sent, I end up using the post office as well so I can add on return receipt. Also, the poster I just replied to made me realize that prior to moving out to the rural area where we live now, I lived in the city for 10 years where we had a mail slot!

My uncle was a minister and years ago his family moved into a parsonage that was in a run-down part of town. They put mail in their box for the carrier to pick up. The carrier left it for several days. They finally called the post office and they told them that due to the large number of thefts from home mailboxes, they didn't pick up in their part of town. They had to mail all of their mail from a post office letter box.

The postman doesn't pick up outgoing mail here. We do have mailboxs that we can put it in around town so that is helpful, although I do go to the post office regularly.

I remember that from my many visits to Canada. Do they still deliver mail twice a day in Canada? I remember thinking on my first trip to Saskatoon thinking it was odd that the mail carrier came twice a day, but wouldn't pick up mail as he came by. As I recall junk mail (flyers, ads, etc) came in the morning, first class mail was delivered in the afternoon.

In our city the mailman doesn't really deal too much with flyers. So the city newspaper office deals with delivering the local paper/flyers every Thursday night while Canada post deals with the real mail like bills. It's not twice a day every day.
We will soon just have community boxes as Canada post is cutting costs. We had those at our last house, the flyers still got delivered to the door.

Our mail carriers walk house to house and most of our mailboxes are attached to the house. They pick up here, always have.
They used to have a bunch more mailboxes around, nit sure why they got rid of them, but the few they have left, I really think they should put in front if the grocery stores-pretty much everyone I know goes there at least once a week anyway, so it's a good spot.

We live in the country so have a mailbox on a post by the road, it has a red flag we put up when we have outgoing mail in the box to be picked up.

I know there are large, blue mailboxes to use outside the post office here in town, and there is one by the college in a neighboring down and a couple out by the shopping area as well.

We have a wonderful mail carrier, she will even get out of her car and put a package she's delivering inside the back door if it's unlocked. She usually pulls into the driveway and honks her car horn to let us know she has a package and we'll at least meet her at the door, or go out to her car if we have enough time to get there. But if we're not home she will either put it inside the door, or on the step by the door if the door is locked.

She always has rolls of stamps with her too, so I could leave a check in an envelope and she'll leave a roll of stamps in the mailbox too.

We have never had mail delivery twice a day.. Flyers are not Postal Worker territory.
When I was young they did pick up outgoing, I can't remember when that stopped.

This was 1966, so going back a bit. Maybe flyers isn't the best way to put it Junk mail. Here in the U.S. it's called Bulk mail. They pay a sharply reduced rate, which often makes some folks upset because they don't this mail, but in the U.S. they mass mail in such numbers that even at the reduced rate, it is highly profitable for the post office.

If you mean ads, as you mentioned earlier, these come once a week (Thursday) in a plastic bag, not delivered by Postal workers, but a private company.. The weekly advertisements are ALL in it. It is extremely rare that anything else comes with the mail, perhaps an odd strangler for Dominos, but that is about it..

Come to think of it, about 10 years ago we had the same thing, we'd find a plastic bag of ads on the door step. Then the economy tanked, I guess the Post Office does it cheaper. We get all the grocery store ads in the mail, on Tuesday, for the sales that start Wednesday.

What are you using the word "strangler" to refer to?

I tried looking it up but couldn't find anything that might fit the meaning the way you have used it.
