How much outgoing mail can you put in your mailbox?

Sorry, dumb question, but I don't want to overwhelm my mailman!

I'm sending out about 40 pieces of mail (birth announcement cards, regular sized envelopes). Can I just put them all in my mailbox with the flag up for the mailman to take or is that too many pieces of mail?

I rarely send regular mail & never use the flag up option, so this is sorta foreign to me.

Thanks! :)

I used to send all my Christmas cards that way.....sometimes over 100. I did rubber band them so it was easier for the postal carrier to pick them up.
Flag up and should be good

All of them are fine. I send out lots of packages due to online selling, and the carrier always picks them up.

Yes, don't know if this is just a states thing (I see you are from Canada). You just put the red flag on the mailbox up & the mail carrier will take it. I've put 1-2 pieces of mail in there to be mailed in the past, but never this many.

If it fits, it ships.

There are people who don't know how to use a mailbox? :rotfl2:

You don't necessarily need a flag either. My mailbox is attached to the house and is the kind that is a bin with a lift up lid. If I have one or two pieces to go out I just have it hang out of the mailbox with the lid holding it and it gets picked up.

Also, if you really have a lot or if you have packages with pre-paid labels, you can schedule a pickup online and they'll come and get it free of charge.

I have the same type of mailbox and just leave it hanging out as well.

I have also left prepaid boxes out. I just put them on the railing near the mailbox.

I might put in a few, but not often. Our town used to have lots of mailboxes all over town, but most were removed. Our mailbox is attached to the house, and the mailman has walk from house to house.

Most of ours were removed from around town as well for some reason. Maybe because there are more and more people like me who don't send regular mail as much anymore?

It's a pain for me to get to the post office lately, so this is a great option :)

Yes. Its really convenient.
Of course. Why wouldn't you be able to? :confused3

The PP is Canadian. We have always needed to use a Post Office or a Post Office mail box for outgoing mail. Heck, we consider ourselves lucky to even get home delivery.:rolleyes2 Most of us have to pick up our mail at neighborhood "superboxes".

The postman doesn't pick up outgoing mail here. We do have mailboxs that we can put it in around town so that is helpful, although I do go to the post office regularly.

How inconvenient! I would never have thought that anyone, anywhere, couldn't put outgoing mail in their boxes if they have them! Guess we can put as much in ours as it would hold - lots more than I'd have to mail! ;)

I am Canadian, just outside Toronto now, and yes we can put out outgoing mail in the box. :thumbsup2 (I would be on what's considered a "rural route" so not sure if that makes a difference, but yeah, we can do it.)

Same thing here, and I just don't get it. They want to complain that people don't use their service as much as they used to, then they make it harder to use their service.

My post office even took the package drop box out of the lobby, along with the stamp machine. I can't mail a package unless the post office is actually open. Can't buy a stamp without getting in line. That's just nutty.

I used to have an awesome carrier who would take a package if I set it on the porch right under our mailbox. I did that with the new carrier and he laid a package he was delivering right up against the one I wanted him to take and left it there. LOL. I'm still not convinced they really want me to use their service........

It seems they removed most of the drop mailboxes around towns in these parts too. The only ones I know of are right outside the Post Offices.

But we've always been able to leave outgoing mail in our street mailbox. The most I've ever put in it was around 75 wedding invitations. No problem.

It was my understanding that they removed the drop boxes from a lot of places because they were getting broken into and mail was being stolen. People were after the checks inside.

Thank you!

I lived in a town (Arlington, MA) once where all mailboxes were either attached to the house or were letter slots in the door. at least the part of town I lived in, the mail carrier did not pick up outgoing mail. Its the only place I ever lived that the mail carrier didn't. DH said it was because the mail carriers walked their route as opposed to driving in a truck. not sure if that is the case but it made sense. when we moved to a less city-like town, we had mail pick up. dh didn't trust pickup for years because he grew up without it and was shocked everytime I would put something out and they would take it. lol.
