How much of your child's illness is a parent required to divulge to school staff?

they don't want you to be absent much:rotfl:......but remember the schools are very insistant that you not send your child to school sick:lmao:

A) with a fever, and don't return until child is fever free 24 hours
b) stomach bug and are vomiting
c) pink eye
d) lice (had to throw in that one)
e) diarreha
f) virus

just know that so many parents follow the rules and do whats right and some kids are more prone than other to catch everything. Which can lead to many absences.

by the same token people send their kids to school constantly when they are sick. Then they get all the other kids sick and the staff too!:scared1:

exactly!

I think that if your child is within the attendance policy that they do not need any further information. That being said, how sick is he to miss school? If it just oh he has a little cough and runny nose or is he running a fever and miserable? Have you see a doctor about seeing if there is anything you can do to increase his immune system?

Why should the A student have to make up work he/she already made up? I do not understand. :confused3

So they just go into summer school to make up the days, regardless of if they have actually done the work?

Here summer school is apprently reserved for those that are failing and in fact, if you have missed too many days, you CAN'T go to summer school to make any of it up.

Its interesting how different the school systems are.

Our schools allow 12 days per year. and there is a limit on the number of days that they can accept notes from parents too (not sure of the number but its well over 12)--not consectutive days, a number of days over the year.

What a complete waste of tax payer money. With all the kids they have who genuinely need extra help to keep their grades up, it's beyond idiotic to send kids with good grades to summer school. That's what you get when you have bureaucrats making mindless policies with no flexibility.

Actually, and I wasn't clear, they are 2 different programs. If you have exceeded your maximum number of absences, but have passed, you have to attend "make-up" sessions. It is not summer school, there is no actual instruction. You just sit in the school. Summer make-up runs the same times and hours as summer school. Though, to be fair, if you have unexcused absences it is within the teacher's rights to issue a "0" for those days, possibly failing you.

Summer school, where there is actual instruction, is reserved for those who fail, for whatever reason.

The parent has to pay for both programs.

Make-up sessions are the high school level only. I think it is mostly to discourage ditching. At the elementary and junior high level if absences are excessive the parent is referred to truancy court and social services. Around here they can, and will, fine you for not sending your kids to school. The 1st offense is $875.

Seriosly? They pay someone to babysit high school kids all summer? And the kids are expected to just sit there, doing nothing productive all summer? For real????? Whatever you pay, your taxes are too high if they have that kind of money to burn on such a ridiculous program.

hey 875$ for all day daycare for the summer doesn't sound bad! ;) I'm so glad this does not exists in my district most if not all parents wouldn't be able to afford it.. there is no way I could come up with the money.. so looks like we'd homeschool for the end of the year and start of the year then put them back in school.. it would probably work so they didn't have to do this stupid stupid summer babysitting program. :rolleyes1 someone remind me to never move even if the thought enters my mind.

That's interesting, because after the last time I posted in this thread, I was at a school event that included some parents that have kids at the high school dd will attend next year.

Apparently one of their kids had missed too many days and she will have to pay $475 to sit in a classroom for a month (from the time school is out until sometime in June) I got the impression that it doesn't actually cost the school anything because one of the staff members that are there during that time will be responsible for the kids in that room.

Also the high school attendance rules are a lot stricter than jr. high. They can only miss 2 days each semester that a parent note will be accepted for, all others either have to be excused by the principal (as in a jr. or sr. going to an event at a college or athletic showcases, etc.), a school trip or event, or a dr. excuse.
