I have read many threads here on the boards about ny/nj weddings. I guess they would hate me than. Because I would not let someone else's expectations decide what I should or should not give as a gift.

Sorry you are in that situation.

To me it was more important to have my family at my wedding than it was to receive a gift. Too bad more people don't realize that.

I don't feel that you have to give more because you are in the wedding, but I live in the midwest in a rural town and things are different here than in the big cities.

I personally always like sentimental gifts. I'm going to my cousins wedding tonight and it's a second wedding for both the bride and groom. Each of their first marriages ended awfully. I bought a lovely pitcher and am going to write a sentimental note to go along with it.
