Me and my 9 yr old niece will be at WDW over Spring Break(along with 100,000 of my closest friends!!).

I want to give her Disney Dollars to use on the vacation. How much would you think is good? And how would you dole(sp?) it out.

Thanks for your ideas.

At that age I gave my kids $100 each. That included money that got for holidays. For example give her some in her stocking at Christmas. Some for Valentines Day, etc. They paid for ice creams, souv. with that money. Hope this helps. This year grandma is giving them their money for Christmas because it is a suprise trip.

This is perfect. Her mom will love you for this! My kids earn Disney Dollars to spend any way they want. Man let me tell you how you can milk this puppy!

My son gets dollars for taking out the trash, or helping with his brother...I even give him one dollar for every store hes good in when i have to take him to the mall..............

Its major bribery, but who cares. He usually racks up about $40 in the few months preceding the trip and thats usually plenty.

My kids typically have gotten $5 per day for our duration....until this year when they are bring money they have earned themselves...

My DD 8 and DS 10 each had money from birthdays and allowances. They had about $100 each, and since it was THEIR money they got to spend it as they wished....

BUT:

If they wanted a stuffed animal (WE DO NOT NEED ANYMORE!) or something we felt was not worth the money, then they had to spend their own money for it. It was amazing how careful they were when it was their own money. Both of them came home with money, and then used it to buy something they had both wanted before vacation.

We paid for all snacks and we did buy them some things, and got them their T shirts... (although we only bought one each at Disney, then headed to Wal-Mart for the rest!)

My DD9 also got $5 per day until this year, when she saved her $5 per week allowance for a few months, then also got $20 for her birthday, so she had a total of $45 for a week which was plenty. She was very careful with her own $$, it was great to see. We did buy her a few special pins and a bottle strap, but otherwise, she was on her own this year.

$100 sounds like a lot to me, but then again, I am kinda frugal.

That $100 was from birthday gifts, where a friend who had been to Disney gave them each money in Disney Dollars, as well as 3 months worth of allowance, and some bonus money. They did spend some, but both came home with about half.

Oh, they didn't spend it all at Disney either, we went to the Naval Exchange by the airport, and they got a few things there too.

We were there almost 2 weeks.

My DS(11) will end up having over a $100 to spend when we go in December. He has $85 right now that he got from his birthday and we are planning on giving him $50 (that's $10 a day). As of right now he wants to buy a Pal Mickey with his money. He's really a great saver though when he has something in mind that he wants.

Last year, my then 9 year old DSD had about $100, but that was birthday money, a little money from us, and a little money from her mom. Her was for whatever souviners she wanted, she also bought a few Christmas presents for her mom, her brother, her cousin, but she was very good with it. I held it for her, and before she would buy something, I would make sure it was something that she really wanted. She was much better than her 11 year old cousin, who blew about $50 at the game room at CR!

My girls straddled your niece in age at our last trip. They had saved money (Disney $ and cash) for 4 months or so. Birthday money, allowance, extra chore money, etc. My 10 yo went with about $80 and she still came home with some Disney $ (which she bought a CD with at TDS LOL!) My 7 yo went with about $45 and I helped her out a bit with some purchases that she wanted. My 4yo ds had about $40 and his dad helped him with his "big purchase" at WOD in DTD.

I will admit that we have SAP's and go to WDW at least once a year if not twice, and this wasn't our first and only trip, so the actual purchasing of things has tapered off. We have collections that we buy for (charms, character figurines, die cast cars, kitchen items, etc.) So we have become a bit more selective. If this was going to be a once in a lifetime (or a once in a childhood) trip I would probably let the kids have more like $100-$200 for a week's vacation.

Have fun and I wish you had been my auntie when I was a kid:sunny:

When we took my niece and nephew (ages 6 & 8 at the time) They got $10 a day, if they spent it --great. If they wanted to carry it over to the next day -- that was good too. ( We bought them shirts, mickey ears, etc) They spent their $$ very carefully. We were really impressed.

We have a plastic jar that we have been throwing change into since January. Our trip is Thanksgiving week. Our boys are 7 and 15. We told them that any extra change we manage to save before the trip is split between them to spend at WDW. As of last week the total is $296! In addition we have been giving them allowance for chores each week with the stipulation that 1/2 of their earnings gets put away.Well, our 7 yr old likes saving so much he wont even spend the 1/2 he can spend!
I believe he might have a change of heart when he is in WDW!
And I feel good about indulging them and not having to say 'no' to everything.:earsboy:

We also have a 9 year old who is very careful with his money. I Generally am lucky that the nana's and Uncles will usually hand a $20 for the trip. He typically ends up with about a $100 he never spends it. Last trip he bought a flashlight thingy, and a little robotic creature from Universal. He had about $80 left. As far as sodas and snacks and things of that nature. I pay for all of that for him. If he is off with Uncle he knows he has his own money for those things.

Funny story when he was 3. We went to Disney and he had amassed about $150 Disney dollars from various relatives. And at 3!!!!! We could not get him to part with any of it. Do you want this? Or this? Perhaps this? we were on a misson to get him to spend his money. on day 6 of 7. He broke down and bought a foldable Mickey hairbrush for $4. At AK. And that was his total purchase for the week. If you noticed, People used to give him Disney money now its just regular cash.

I see some kids don't spend all their Disney Dollars. So can you exchange them back into US Currency when you leave the World, or do you have to hold onto them until next time?
