I'm just curious to see where my dh and I fall in the money making category. How much do you make a year? Also is anyone from Michigan with this income? Thanks

I doubt many people are going to want to tell you their income. Here's a website from the IRS that lists average income by state. http://www.incometaxlist.com/income-tax-state.htm

Wow, that's eye-opening!

I think that you'll also find regional differences within the states themselves. I know that Northern Jersey salaries reflect the proximity to NYC while South Jersey wages are closer to what you'd make in Philly. Philly and Pgh have a large difference in average wages and Central PA averages even lower incomes than either of them.

The CoL in the various regions also affect the buying power that wages have. We could live quite comfortable in one area of the country but would be struggling in some urban regions on our household income.

BTW - I'm not gonna share ours, OP. I wouldn't want to have someone forming an opinion of me based on some number. I'm not sure how many people you will get who are willing to post their income for the same reason.

I agree.
I do remember someone who posted a poll either here on the BB or the CB many years ago when there were less than 50,000 members and the outcome of that poll found that a lot of the members earned a lot more than the national average.

It's a lot easier for most members to post their income on a poll than to be identified by name as earning a certain amount.

I agree that a poll is the way to go with a question like this. Also, the question, when it's been asked in the past has found that, as a general rule, the DISboard population is skewed higher than average. That makes sense if you consider that the DISboards population is predominantly folks who have a computer, have internet access, and can vacation regularly... or are at least considering vacationing.

Spending time on the DISboards does tend to warp your sense of the "norm". If I only based my perception on the DIS, then I'd think most families have Wiis and iphones. Oh, and wait 'till Christmas approaches and people start listing the bucketloads of stuff they're giving their kids. Just sayin' the DIS isn't "average".

Personally, I'm happy if the roof over my head doesn't leak, the bills are paid on time, and we've got a bit extra put aside for the future. I don't measure myself by what other people make/have.

I have to totally agree with this. I think the DIS is definitely above average income wise.

I am not sharing that info. Hard to believe that you asked (and noticed YOU did not share!)

If NJs figure is for a single person, I agree. If it's for a household, it is well understated, and no wonder our state is in as much debt as it is, no one is reporting their accurate incomes. They must be using that "net" amount instead of gross.

Is that household income or individual? I couldn't tell from the website?

Maggie

Since those numbers are derived from income tax returns, it would depend on if you filed jointly or single. Would say though that the numbers shown there would probably average out to be household income.

Seems a lot lower than I thought it would be!

I have no idea--I googled it and that site came up. There are lots of sites that break the info down in different ways--just google "Average Income by State."

That is really fascinating. Click on your state in the main list, it will show you the average income by zip code. I feel like NYC is kind of skewed when looking at averages though; here there can easily be very wealthy families & very poor families living in the same zip code.

Also I agree with the PPs who suggested a poll. I'd answer a poll.

Not sharing our income either. Sorry, I was taught that's bad manners. What I will share share though is my new favorite resource for comparing incomes, cost of living, populations, demographics, ect.

It was posted on the DIS a while back and I fell in love the first time I clicked on it. Since we'd like to move to another area of the country but haven't decided where, I've had a lot of fun playing on this site. After you compare salaries, there's an option to further break it down and compare your zip code to any other in a large variety of fields for a truer picture of what that income would really mean there for you. :thumbsup2

Go check it out --- http://www.bestplaces.net/COL/

I find it very hard to believe the average income in Philadelphia PA is lower than that of Allentown PA.

You have to remember that this is AVERAGE income, which is statistically different from median income and mode income. I would say that actually the OP is looking for the Mode Income bracket which is the income which occurs most frequently for her state. Average can be skewed as a pp noted by just one astronomically higher income or by those people reporting really low incomes - in particular students or prisoners - I know that's the case in my hometown (not where I live now). There are three prisons in town. The average income of these prisoners is something like $1,000 or less. There are 5,000 of them (and yes, their incomes are factored in by the government when calculating average income - it's how the town has avoided putting in low income housing and how they qualify for all kinds of aid for the school system :rolleyes1). The rest of the people in town account for approximately another 3,000 families. Their family incomes actually mode in a range of $100,000+ (there are a few NFL players who live in town which helps bring the average up) but the average income for the town is in the range of $60,000 because the 5,000 1,000 figures outweigh the 3,000 $100,000. Sorry, end of math lesson.

I believe the polite answer to questions of this nature is "I'll excuse you for asking if you'll excuse me for not answering". ;)

I'm not surprised to see I'm about 15K short of the avg for my zip code. I was wondering why all the neighbors had such nice cars! :lmao:
