It must be a regional thing, because we live in southern Alabama and there are only about two Christmas Tree farms within a 100 mile radius of us and their prices start at about $50.00 - and that's for a small tree. The bigger 7 or 8 foot trees are close to $100.00.
I love traditions. I have always wanted to cut our own. We have found it difficult to find a reasonably priced cut your own around us. Maybe someday, the Grandkids and I can start that tradition. I wonder how many DH would let me browse until chopping one down...hmmm
We went to a cut your own place. All their trees, regardless of size or type are $15.
The tree lots that have the precut ones start the trees at $25.
I have four children and we have always had a live tree. I can't even fathom why our pediatrician would tell us not to get a live Christmas tree. Also, most Christmas Tree farms start cutting the trees for shipment a couple of weeks before Thanksgiving. There is no species of pine tree that would be suitable for Christmas sale if it was cut in late summer or early fall.
Important bit in that article. "This value is for Fraser fir production in western North Carolina. Other areas of the country produce different species of trees with different pest problems." And they say 1/4 ounce over the 8 years it takes to grow a tree.

The most hazardous and second-most common pesticide in North Carolina Christmas tree farming is Di-Syston 15-G, a powder traditionally applied with a bucket and measuring spoon. "If one grain gets in your boot, and your foot sweats, by the end of the day, you could be dead" says Richard Boylan, an alternative agriculture agent with the North Carolina State University Cooperative Extension....

It has been over 10 years since I have bought a live tree. DH and I thinking of getting one next year for baby's first christmas (DH's first live tree too) and was wondering what everyone is currently paying for their trees this year so we have an idea. The last time I got a live tree we went to a cut your own tree farm and got one for $35.
Overreact much?Yes, early to mid-November is the time they harvest the Christmas Trees, accept for some remote parts in northern Canada, where they have to do it before the winter sets in. I remember being surprised watching a special about it on the Discovery Channel.
And why would a pediatrician say something about it? If pesticides are used properly, there should be nothing to worry about, but how do we know for sure???
