It has been over 10 years since I have bought a live tree. DH and I thinking of getting one next year for baby's first christmas (DH's first live tree too) and was wondering what everyone is currently paying for their trees this year so we have an idea. The last time I got a live tree we went to a cut your own tree farm and got one for $35.

It really all depends on where you go, what kind of a tree farm/store it is.. we usually go to a nursery here, and pay about $60-$65 for a 6-6 1/2 ft one.

I've seen them advertised for less than $20 here at places like Lowe's. I thought that was pretty low but maybe the cut your own places are higher.

Well I go to a tree farm where we pick the tree and the owner cuts it down. It cost us $20. That's really cheap. The guy is getting out of the business (has been for 4 years) and so we are lucky to be customers since he no longer sells to the general public. If I remember they go for about $50 in this area otherwise.

We just cut one ourselves last weekend for $35. The price depended on the type of tree and its height. Ours is probably over 7 feet.

We also cut ours own down this weekend it was also $35.00. Seems like that must be the going rate this year.

Don't they spray those trees with anything??? Depends where that tree comes from, it may be sprayed for bugs or just to make it last longer. Some X-mass trees are cut down starting late summer / early fall far away in northern Canada…

We used to have live tree until our first baby was born, that’s when we switched to the fake one based on doctor’s advice.

We have many places locally that grown their own and they aren't sprayed. I'm sure the ones at Lowes are since they are half dead already, One place had some green paint on the trunk of a tree, so it was given a "lift". A friend of mine in HS's parents bought a live tree for each child's first Christmas and planted it afterward (you can only keep it inside for a day or so) but it was neat to see all 6 kid's trees out in the yard. My dad planted a tree when my nephew was born and it's now 30 years old. I wish I had thought to plant a tree on DD's first Christmas, the ground was frozen solid though. I guess if you move a lot it wouldn't matter.

I have four children and we have always had a live tree. I can't even fathom why our pediatrician would tell us not to get a live Christmas tree. Also, most Christmas Tree farms start cutting the trees for shipment a couple of weeks before Thanksgiving. There is no species of pine tree that would be suitable for Christmas sale if it was cut in late summer or early fall.

OP, we got our quite live, quite beautiful, 8 foot tree at Lowe's for about $43.00.

We cut ours down and it was $50. It is almost 9 feet. We love the smell and look of a real tree. Have been getting a real one since the year before dd14 was born!

The one you cut down will last up to 6 weeks. One that is precut will last from 2-4 weeks, depepnding on when you get it and when it was cut down. Just remember to cut off about an inch of the bottom when you get it home so it can drink the water.

We've had live trees for 42 years (my parents always had live trees), with no health issues (and I've never heard of any). Trees seem to be more expensive here - at least $60 for a cut your own.

We cut ours down at a local tree farm every year. This year the pines were $35.00 and the firs (longer to grow, more popular) were $47.00. We bought at Lowes once a few years ago and a douglas fir was only $22.00, but when we got it home we realized it had been painted green :confused3. They were supposed to be fresh but obviously were "embellished". We'd rather pay the extra money and get a tree that we know is fresh. A live tree is a great idea but I know I don't want to be the one digging a hole the 1st week of January during a Pennsylvania winter.....Good Luck! :goodvibes

Frazier Firs are going for around $40-50 here at HD for that size. The size we need (12') would be around $150, so we bought a nice Frazier Fir fake about 15 years ago. It's still nice and a PITA to put up.

FYI, if you want the smell of real trees, but have to use a fake, you can get the trimmings from the real trees at HD for free. I got a big bunch that I am going to lay out on my hearth. If I ever get to that point.

We went to a cut your own place. All their trees, regardless of size or type are $15.

The tree lots that have the precut ones start the trees at $25.

I think where you live determines price!
Where we live it's cut your own..any size up to 12 feet for $40 including tax! We always get a Douglas Fir.

It must be a regional thing, because we live in southern Alabama and there are only about two Christmas Tree farms within a 100 mile radius of us and their prices start at about $50.00 - and that's for a small tree. The bigger 7 or 8 foot trees are close to $100.00.

OMG, that is crazy. :headache: I'm so used to CT being overpriced in everything, it's nice for something to be cheap for a change.

What's funny is that our local Costco is selling real trees :) And they're are just lovely looking -- full and lush, I want to say about $45.

As for issues, from the year he was born until the age of 3, my brother got terribly sick every Christmas. Finally they figured out he had an allergy to the tree. Not life threatening, but enough that constant exposure just put him down for the count through out the holidays. Poor kid. This was the 70's, at least now doctors and parents are way more on the look out for allergic issues in kids. I would hope that it wouldn't take 3 years for a doctor to catch on these days.

We paid $55 for our 7 ft. tree in Boston. I can't remember the type, but it's supposed to shed much less than the usual kind (and they came from S. Carolina, so a greater shipping cost to the retailer). The regular ones ranged from $35-$50, depending on the size.
