How much (if any) sick leave do you get?

How much sick leave (or PTO in addition to normal vacation) do you get

  • Unlimited -- if you're sick, you take off, with pay

  • No sick leave at all -- if you take off you don't get paid

  • 15 or more days a year of sick leave or additional PTO

  • 13-14 days a year of sick leave or additional PTO

  • 11-12 days a year of sick leave or additional PTO

Being a substitute teacher I don't get sick days. However, if we do a long term we get one every 30 days worked. Since I have been in the same position since early Sept I have earned a few but only have taken one. :)
 
Another public school teacher here. I get 1 sick day per month for a total of 10 I may use 2 of those days for Personal Business. We also may use a sick day for a spouse illness, child, etc. I have about 40 days accumulated in my sick bank. When I retire, I will get $10 for each one of those days for a total of $400.

I am also a public school employee. we get 13 sick days per year ( we can accumulate up to 125 ), and 3 personal days, which we lose if we don't use them before the end of the school year. I think I have somewhere between 50-60 sick days accumulated. I still have 2 personal days left to take before school ends on 6/22 :sunny:

Which German company do you work for? I work for a Boeing subsidiary.
 

I teach kindergarten in a day care center. Classroom staff, kitchen staff, office staff (except directors, they are in a different union) and housekeeping, all accrue time off at a different rate. However, the same usage policies applies to all of us.

I receive 1 sick day a month, 3 personal days and 30 vacation days a year. The maximum amount of time we can have in our vacation account is 60 days. Anything over that will get rolled over to sick time.

We can only use up to 20 vacation days at one time. If we use 3 consecutive sick days, we have to bring in a doctor's note when we return to work.
 
I work for the federal government. We "earn" 4 hours of sick leave per two-week pay period (adds up to about 13 full days a year). Any unused sick leave can be carried over to the next leave year, and you can carry over sick leave indefinitely. This is completely separate from annual leave, which can be used for any purpose.
 
I just take whatever I want. I don't get paid though. I'm not the financial supporter of the family, so it doesn't really matter.

DH gets 15 days per year of personal/sick/vacation time that has to be taken in half-day increments. Next year, he'll get another 5 days in "vacation" time (and so on as he's with the company longer and gets more time - they get up to 6 weeks paid vacation depending on their years with the company), but the days can really be used in any way. Most of his days were used when I was in the hospital. He also gets 72 hours of time off where he can come in late or leave early for doctor's appointments or family events. So, instead of taking a half-day personal day, he can leave an hour early and that hour is paid and comes out of the 72 hours. Last year, he actually ran out of paid days in any form and had to take a few days unpaid when I was in the hospital. The company was so nice. They offer FMLA unpaid, but didn't count the 3 days as FMLA, they just let him have it off. It didn't count against him at his annual review last week either. He also gets short-term and long-term disability paid at 80%.
 
12 sick days per year, and they accumulate year to year. Some guys at work have 300+ sick days in their bank....if you don't use them and you retire then they buy them back from you at about 50 percent of what they are worth so you still get a nice check when you retire of around 30,000.
 
I receive 10 hours of time off per month. The time can be used as sick leave or vacation time. I am also only allowed to carryover 80 hours per year. If I don't use the time, I lose the time.
 
We don't get any sick time built into our vacation time - for that I get 5 weeks + 7 days.

I am not sure if the policy has changed, but in the past it was a certain amount of occurences (an occurence being up to the number of days before disability kicks in) before you were called on it as being a problem. I have not worked in a non management position for some time, nor do I supervise non management so I have not checked the policy recently!

I have worked for the same company for 26 1/2 years, and out of my home for the last 11 years, so unless I am so sick I can't lift my head off the pillow (I do get an occasional migraine) I normally just work around not feeling well. It's another great benefit that what our company calls "Virtual Office" offers. A better ability to balance personal and business needs!
 
I get 2 weeks paid vacation and 5 sick/personal days. My unused days do not carry over to the next year, but I am paid for any unused days at the end of each year. There really isn't that much distinction between a sick day and a vacation day - they are pretty much interchangeable.

Another federal employee here - 13 sick days per year with umlimited carryover. After 28 years (and two 3-month maternity leaves), I have around 1600 hours of sick leave banked - which I hope I never have to use!
 
I get 10 vacation days, 3 personal days, and 5 sick days per year. The downside is that they expire if you do not use them in a calendar year. DH gets 15 "paid time off" days per year that do not expire, however he has to use them to take holidays off, if they do not fall on a weekend, like Christmas, Thanksgiving, etc.
 
I get 12 sicks days with unlimited carryover, 10 paid holidays and 16 vacation days which I can carryover up until the point of 1 1/2 times my annual time allowed. I have tons of sick hours never really ever use them but I do use my vacation time up each year!
 
I get 4 weeks paid vacation time (1 week can be rolled over to the next year but you can never have more than 5 weeks vacation time), 1 week of sick time (that can be rolled over to the next year but you can never accumulate more than 2 weeks sick time), and 2 days of personal time. We can take the vacation and sick time in half day increments and personal time however you want it. The only catch for sick and personal time is you lose a point whenever you use it and we only get 7 points in a rolling year. When you get to -1 point, you are terminated. If you don't use your sick or personal time for 6 months, again in a rolling year, you get $100, for a year, $250 and after 3 years, you get $1000. I have figured it out and I'm better off using all of my time, just watching my points, than taking the cash. With 6 kids still at home, I never have any time left anyway. I'm just lucky that my boss lets us use our overtime as comp time and he also lets us work flex hours. Basically as long as our work is done, he doesn't care when you actually work, as long as you don't abuse it of course.

We also get 10 paid holidays every year.
 
My workplace is weird.

You don't technically get approved sick time unless you arrange it in advance. Scheduled sick time is allowed with manager approval.

However, if you suddenly get ill and call in, you can get paid but you will basically be scored a '0' for any missed time. This company is high on scoring so those days will count against you. So no sudden illnesses from things like the flu!
 
We only have 2 full time employees and give them 40 hours sick time and 16 hours personal time per year in addition to vacation hours.
 
I work for a small company. We get NO sick pay. We get 5 days vacation after 1 year of work, and 10 days after 2 years. It never goes up from there. We have people that have worked for the company 25-35 years, and still only get 10 days a year.

I use a lot of my vacation time to stay home with sick kids. I rarely take a day off for myself.
 
CarolG, you're probably under CSRS? They get some sort of payment for unused sick leave at retirement. I have read in some fed newsletter that FERS doesn't pay retirees for unused sick leave, so they all end up taking lots of sick leave just before retirement. OPM was thinking about changing that.

I only have 8 years in and nowhere near that kind of leave banked.

Not unlimited at full pay but pretty generous -and also very complicated and confusing.

6 extra days added to PTO in addition to vacation. So someone entitled to two weeks of vacation (10 days) would have 16 days of PTO - can be used for anything no excuse needed.

After 5 consecutive days of PTO for an illness something else kicks in (can't remember the initials) but it is so many days of sick leave a year which can accumulate. So someone out for surgery for six weeks would use 5 days of pto and 25 days of the other.

When that has been exhausted then short term disability kicks in. It is mandatory in CA. The company adds on to the CA policy to make up 2/3 of pay for six months. Since no 401K is taken out and the CA disability payments are not taxable it is pretty close to full take home salary.

The CA will pay for a year. After six months a long-term disability kicks in that makes a payment of 2/3 of salary. Long-term disability can last until age 65 plus s/s disability usually kicks in too - benefits still capped at 2/3 of salary.

See I told you it was complicated but very generous.
