How much (if any) sick leave do you get?

How much sick leave (or PTO in addition to normal vacation) do you get

  • Unlimited -- if you're sick, you take off, with pay

  • No sick leave at all -- if you take off you don't get paid

  • 13-14 days a year of sick leave or additional PTO

We get 5 sick days a year. They don't carry over. If you get sick and don't have enough time they let you go in to the "red". We can use/are expected to use our vacation time (10 days) and personal time (4 days) to cover our sick time if we're out longer than 2 days and don't have enough sick time.
 
My company gives no sick days with pay. We do have a Canadian or Ontario law that means we can have up to 10 Family Emergency Days without pay before they affect any point/attendance system the company has.
We get 4% accumulating vacation time for first 5 years (10 days for a full time employee) then it goes up to 6% and I think it goes up again after that - not sure when though. We also get 2 floating holidays per year that we can use when we want.

Plus the 8 Statutory Canadian Holidays.
Our benefit package does include a short term and long term disability plan which covers approx. 60% of pay.
 
I work for a subsidiary of a Dutch company and we definitely don't get all of the time off they get in Amsterdam!

Coming in off the street as a new employee (which I still am, have been there a little over a year), we get 20 PTO days to be used for vacation, sick, etc. We also get 4 personal days, 1 earned per quarter (can carry over from quarter to quarter) and 8 holidays. NONE of it can be carried to the next year, so it's use it or lose it. The max you can earn is 30 days of PTO after you 've been there a long time. We don't get paid for any of it if we leave the company and it's not used up.

We also get "dinged" for calling out sick if it's an unplanned absence. I think we're allowed 8 within a rolling year. We don't have any attendance problems within my little dept though. But I've seen others in our call centers get fired within the last year for attendance problems.

Our corporation doesn't believe in sick days. We can use a vacation day if we need to or work extra time that week to make the hours up. Working extra time isn't always easy if you haven't been feeling well in the first place.

Our vacation is somewhat limited - after 8 yeares I have 13 days of vacation. It is better than some but not great if you develop an illness.
 

I work for a hospital.

I get 39 paid days off per year. This includes vacation, holidays, and sick time - also called Combined Time Off (CTO).

When we take off Christmas, we need to use one day of CTO. However, we can get short term disability for illness once all our time is used up (I think a doctor has to sign off, but not certain).

CTO can be banked from year to year, with a max of 450 hours accumulated before you need to use it or lose it. We are also allowed to "sell off" up to 10 days per year for cash (my vacation fund). We can also "sell off" up to another 10 days to pay health insurance premiums (I am on DH's plan so I don't pay premiums at my job).

I guess this is a fairly generous plan?
 
In addition to vacation, I get 64 PTO hours to use for sick time, extra vacation, doc appts, etc. We also get two floating holidays that you can use for sick time if you need it.
At the end of the year, we don't roll over sick time (5 vacation days can roll over if you want). We get paid $100 for every 8 hours of unused PTO. I used to get lots of PTO pay at the end of the year, now with a baby, I think I'll have to dip into vacation to cover all the out of office hours I'll have!
 
Interesting thread! Here in the UK we get what is called Stautory Sick Pay and if your employers doesn't pay you sick you get about £64 ($115) a week from the Government. For the first 7 days sickness you can sign yourself off but anything over that requires a certificate from the Doctor to say you are unfit for work.
My employers give full pay for 6 months if certified sick then half pay for a further 6 months. The 6 months is calculated from a rolling twleve month period. If you don't go sick at all you don't get anything back from your employer in additional days off work, like it appears some people do in the US.

Our pay is very low, but we get a decent benefit package.

We actually did have "unlimited" sick leave in the sense that if you were sick, you took off. If you were off for more than 7 days in a row, it turned into short term disability (with a doctors approval.)
 
I'm exempt so ours is considered "unlimited" although as others have stated if it gets excessive it can be held against us. I am very happy with it, as I can stay home with DS when he's sick and I am able to work from home with my laptop and not be penalized. The non exempt people in our organization get 48 hours a year and do not generally have the option to work from home so I do count myself as very fortunate.

CarolG, you're probably under CSRS? They get some sort of payment for unused sick leave at retirement. I have read in some fed newsletter that FERS doesn't pay retirees for unused sick leave, so they all end up taking lots of sick leave just before retirement. OPM was thinking about changing that.

Yes, I'm under CSRS (retirement plan that covers most feds hired before 1984). When I retire, any unused sick leave will be added to my length of service for use in computing my annuity amount. I've seen speculation about various buy-back or service credit options for people covered by the newer FERS plan, but haven't heard anything official. I believe changes like that would have to be approved by Congress.

If you're under FERS, make sure you're putting as much as possible into your TSP account (401-K for federal employees). At a minimum, put in enough to get the maximum government matching contributions. (CSRS people don't get matching contributions.)

if you're out for more than 8 consecutive days you're on short-term disability -- meaning, you're being paid from a sick leave fund, you have to have a doctors note, etc.


and unofficially, if you use more than 6 or 7 days throughout the year, you probably should be prpeared to show a medical need for it.

bottom line, the company is generous with sick leave s long as the employees don't abuse it.

Sick days and magic days do not carryover. You can carryover up to 4 vacation days but they must be used in the first qtr of the following year...

My company also has a pension plan, 401K and profit sharing that they contribute to... I LOVE MY JOB!!! :lmao: Actually, I love my company... it's a great company to work for!
 
I'm salaried so I get unlimited. If its more than two weeks consecutive the short term disability kicks in.

Hourly employees in our dept. get no sick time but are allowed to make up any time missed one hour before/after regular work hours (8-5).
