How much for tipping?

We (DH, myself and DD2) are leaving next weekend for a week in DW. We have the DDP and are aware tipping is not included, but how much would you allot for tipping? I'm thinking $300 should cover all of the restaurants plus maid service at the hotel. Does that sound like enough? TIA...

Housekeeping is not a tipped position. They are paid more than most other CMs on the property. So there isn't any requirement to tip the housekeepers unless you are messier than most other guests or have multiple needs of the housekeepers.

This surprises me. We always tip $1/per person/per night in a mousekeeping envelope left on the dresser.

As far as the rest of the tips go, maybe look at the menus and see what it looks like your bill would be if you were paying OOP, plan to tip based on that. :)

You didn't say how long you'd be there, but I'd figure on $20ish per meal depending on where you are eating. I think unless you are going longer than a week $300 would be fine.

Would agree with the around $20 per meal for tipping. There was 3 of us, and that's about what we tipped 2 years ago when we were on the disney dining plan.

I would check the menus out and see how your family eats before you decide how much. Its so subjective, do you drink alcohol, will you order extra, for you childs meal even if its free, you should still include the value of the meal when you figure the tip.

We don't know if you are going with the lower end meals or the higher end meals. There are so many ways to go, I would just take a look at the menus and go from there.

This is debatable.

Thanks everyone. We are pretty simple eaters and neither my husband nor myself drink, so I think our sit down service bill should definitely be under $100 each (which would be a $20 tip at that...20%). We will have 7 sit downs, so the Max would be $140. I think I answered my own question. lol

As for house keeping...we take full advantage of being on vacation, so I think house keeping will appreciate a tip at the end of our stay. hehe

If you're going to tip, you should tip every day, not just one lump sum at the end.

$100 for two adults!?!?!? Wow.:sad2: I must be a simple eater as well. We are a family of 3 with a 2 year old son and on the DDP as well. I was seriously not anticipating $20 each sit down meal.

I am however leaving $3 dollars a night for mousekeeping. Shutterfly had a deal for 12 free thank you cards (all you had to pay was shipping so 3.50). I had them personalized and we will use those.

What have other families done in the past for awful service? I don't anticipate this just wanted to see what other experiences were like. I waitresesd for 6 years and know how little they get paid in comparison to other jobs but will still leave only 10% if the person is horrible.

The character meals are around $35 or so a person, and the kids meals are around $20 or so. For a family of 3, that's pretty much $100. And if you tip 20% on that, you're at a $20 tip. This is even if you're on the disney dining plan...AND you HAVE to use a meal for your kid on the DP, even if they're not going to eat much & could easily eat off your plate. BUT--during your meal, you usually have around 5 to 10 different characters come to your table and give your kid(s) a hug & personal greeting. Yeah, it's expensive, but for young kids it means so much, and that's the part of our trip my daughter talked the most about.

why is that? just curious.

Because you'll have different people cleaning your room every day. If you wait to tip at the end, it may or may not go to the people that cleaned your room for your stay (which was the purpose of the tip, right?)

Actually both OP and my child are under 3 so it is technically only for 2 adults.

What about buffets? Do you tip the same % ?

It may be tacky, but I definitely don't tip the same percentage at a buffet. All they do is bring you a drink! I know they probably make the same low wages as other waiters, but a tip is to reward all their hard work. I'm not adding $30 to the bill for someone to bring drinks and maybe an extra plate.

I do tip though!! Just not 20% :)

I tip the same at buffets. They may not have to bring my food but who knows who all they have to share their tips with. Some restaurants make servers share with the bussers, the bartenders, and the hosts. Do the characters get part of the tip? I don't know. If they do a great job keeping my drink full and empty plates of off the table, because let's face it at buffets your going to end up with at least 2 (dinner and dessert) if not three (salad) or more, then they get 20 percent (or more). If they don't do a good job. .. 15 % and if they're horrible. Hardly anything.

I do. They still do almost as much work as regular servers (even if you don't actually notice it,) and they still have to tip out the support staff.
