I don't normally buy myself toys like this but we sold our house and got a refund check on the escrow account and my DW decided to put it all towards a once in a lifetime (for me anyway) lens purchase. This will be my first "L" lens (and I say first, because from what I hear nobody buys just one) so I am pretty excited. I hope to get it in time for my kid's soccer games next weekend.

Now I just have to wait for the man in brown to show up. I don't think I can wait.

very nice wife.... your going to love the lens. I have the non IS version and would never give it up.

Wow....she loves you for sure:rotfl2: Congrats, this lens seems to be Canons L flagship model! I had the non IS version for a while, I wish I had went ahead and bought the IS version. I think you will really like this lens, the bokeh is nice and smooth! May I ask, which camera body do you own?

Wow very nice:yay: How thoughtful of her:hug: You're going to have a good time with that lens:woohoo:

I hear a lot of stories about people who bought the f/4 who wish they would have bought the f/2.8. And a lot of people who bought the non-IS version who wish they would have bought the IS version, so I went ahead and got both f/2.8 and IS. That way my DW won't have to hear me complain about "This lens is nice, but I really wish I had IS, or f/2.8". So I really did it for her. :rolleyes1

And I use the Rebel XT with battery grip.

she either loves you very much,

or it's a lovely parting gift....LOL

or she figures it's worth it to stop you from whining about wanting such a lens...

that said.....

can I borrow your wife....I need a new camera...LOL

WOW!! YAY! Enjoy and be sure to kiss your wife too :cool1:

You're gonna love it! However, you should start lifting some weights to get your arm prepared for it. It isn't light!

Congrats!

Congrats! That's hands-down the most useful lens in the Canon lineup, next to perhaps the nifty fifty. :) You'll use the bajeezus out of that gorgeous lens!

I was wavering between upgrading from the 300Drebel to the 40D or buying that lens, but am desperately trying to figure out a way to do both.

Hmmm, new linoleum in the kitchen, or the 70-200f2.8is... Hmmmm... :rolleyes1

But she put it on your credit card...

Do you mind sharing where you ordered it from? We are in the market for that same such lens and are comparing places to order it from.

She wouldn't do that. We just eliminated all of our credit card debt the first of the year and won't be doing that ever again.

I ordered it online from B&H Photo. I have ordered a few things from them in the past and have been very happy with the service. They are also very good about returns, which is comforting with big purchases. All the competitve shops were within +/-$10. I often order things from Amazon because they have storehouses here and shipping is usually very, very quick. But being a Washington state resident, I don't have to pay sales tax to B&H, that saved me $146 right there.

I was tempted to wait a while because Canon often has a fall rebate special which could have saved me up to $100 (depending on the special they run). But there is no guarantee that they will do that and I didn't want to miss my kid's fall soccer season. Here in the Seattle area in the fall, even mid-day daylight isn't always bright enough to get a good shutter speed for sports. So I needed something faster at the long end then my 28-135.

SWEET!!!!! Excellent lens!

Now you'll need the 100-400mm IS lens for the even longer stuff...... :)

It NEVER ends.

Very nice- I have the Nikon version 70-200/2.8vr. I'm sure you will love it.

The 70-200mm f/2.8 IS is one of Canon's best lenses. The 100-400mm, well, it's not. I'd love for Canon to come out with something like Nikon's 200-400mm (but at Canon prices).

In case you are tempted to extend your 70-200mm, the 1.4x works very well with it. The 2x, not so good.

Heh, I'm a Seattle surburbanite as well, and that's exactly the same reason I'm looking at that lens! That and nighttime shots at WDW this xmas.

I'm hoping moving up to the 40D will also help a lot, since it's much less noisy at higher ISO's. I just hate going to ISO 400 or above with my original Drebel300D, because I know it just won't be a clean shot.

I've been using the 28-135is since I bought the original kit, and while it's a nice lens, it's just always felt a little soft, and fighting the aperture for gray days has been a constant battle. Can you feel my seething waves of envy??

One more week until my work bonus comes in, then it's off to B&H's website for me too!! :D
