We usually tip $5 each time as well. It is well worth it since the week we were there twice it was storming so the boats stopped running and my mom was very tired and ready to relax. She also used them the morning we went over for early entry since the boats were about 4 boat loads deep and she did not want to wait that long.

There is no "situation". The free boat is less of a walk.

I think that in your case then yes, you should never take the pedicabs and always walk or take the boats.

In our case and many others it seems that they like to use the bikes and are willing to tip based on the experience received. It is just like going to a resturant, yes I can go to a counter service and not have to tip and bring myself my own meal but somtimes I like to just sit back and relax and let someone else wait on me and tip them for doing so.

the bike carriage ride from Citywalk to RPR? I forgot what you call those things but it was so nice to ride one back to the hotel after a long day at the parks. I tipped the guy $10 for me and my 2 older girls (8&6) - he seemed thankful.

We took the "bike ferry" twice on our recent trip. On the first ride, I gave the guy $5. On the second ride, it had started to rain. I only had $20s with me so I tipped a $20 bill. I knew a heavy rainstorm was moving in, and the biker was going to get soaked. I also suspected that his business was going to drop off for the next couple of hours. He seemed really happy.

And it's sometimes well worth me not having to wait up to 20 minutes for a boat. For you, I agree, there is no situation in which it's worth it.

We took one back to PBH in the rain. The boats were not running due to lightening and after waiting at least 20 minutes for a bus that never came, we took the bike ferry.

Since it was raining and there were three of us, we gave him $30. Another time, Dh and I took one from PBH to Citywalk. Dh (always a big tipper) gave him $25.

I guess we're over-tipping! But, I honestly never know what to tip.

Can someone explain these bike rides a little more? Where do they hang out when they don't have passengers - at the hotels and park entrances? How many people can they accomodate?

My son and I took one from the HRH to IoA last June to get to WWoHP early entry. I tipped $5, and I would do that again. It was less then a 5 minute ride, and if they do it 7 or 8 times an hour, they make more than I do as a nurse of 20+ years! But if I was more well off, I think I would tip $10 and ride both ways!

i see them on the hotel pathways.
at the end which empties to city walk or the bus stop near HRH.

also have seen them on the walkways near the exit/entrance at the hotels, just opposite of above.

if you need a pedicab, you can secure one when they are dropping off passengers at the park or the hotel.


i did see 4 in one pedicab but it was tight....

Ten bucks is a ridiculous amount to pay to avoid a ten minute walk or waiting ten minutes for a free boat ride.

We were there in mid December when it was freezing. While we never used the pedicabs, I sure wish that I'd known they were tips-only, because we might have! We were in a situation where we walked up just as a boat was leaving, and there was a very long line in front of us. We opted to stay, though we were so cold it was miserable, and when the boat came back, we were *almost* in a situation where there was no room for us. Thankfully the poeple in front of us were in a larger group than we thought (half their group was outside the line), and there was only room for 4 more on the boat. We were 3 people, told the boat guy that we were 4, and slipped through the group of 10 or more that weren't all in line at the same time. If the people in front of us had not been such a large group, we would have waited for yet another boat. In that weather, $10 would have been cheap for the help!

I think that the pedi-cabs are a fun and unique option at Universal. Lucky at Universal there are options for everyone. The walk from hotels is 5-10 minutes, or there are the free boat rides, and the pedi-cabs for tips (as little or as much as you would like) are just one more option available. Thank goodness you do not have to take an overcrowded bus or drive yourself from one place to the next!

I'm curious whether five more people can quote me to all say exactly the same thing. It's okay to say that ten dollars is a huge tip for a two minute ride. It's also okay to tip that much. Maybe you only have a ten. That's perfectly reasonable. But for someone asking advice on what a reasonable tip is, the answer is not ten dollars. I don't need ten over dramatic stories replying to me like I'm the worst person ever about how the cab saved their life and was well worth that tip. It's enough already.
