Typically how much do you tip ? 20% ? This is of course assuming that you are happy with the service.

i guess i would be one of the very cheap tippers (only with my hairdresser)...how about $5 :rolleyes1 ...but.....
i have gone to her for about 3 years now and go every 6 - 7 weeks and my bill is usually about $100......she also rents her own room and her profit is 100%...

Wow, that is pretty cheap.

I always tip at least 20%, whether I like it or not. I am a sucker that way :( . My current hairdressor just can't give me a good haircut. I don't know why I keep going to her.

Yea my bill is $100 and I usually give 20.00. I am asking this because due to scheduling issues I am changing hairdressers within the same place and was wondering if I could tip less :rolleyes1 . Somehow I started tipping 20.00 and I really would like to tip a little less but I don't want to be to cheap.

Due to my style I go every 4 weeks. I get the roots touched up then also.

yes it is pretty cheap...but her prices also have gone up....but she is already taking between 700 - 800 a year.....its that or go to a cheaper hairdresser
i need to quit spending so much on my hair!:worried:

I always tip 20% and go every 4 weeks. I know how hard it is to find a good hairdresser, so I want to keep her happy. She has changed locations about 4 times during our relationship and luckily for me she has included me in her clientel that she keeps. Of course I still do a monetary cash Christmas gift too. I once lost my hairdresser due to her leaving the area and it took me a long time to find a new one that I liked. Finding a good one that sticks around, does what you want and doesn't cancel on you is rare and hard to find. If you find a good one, take care of them because they can drop you like a hot potatoe. I must be doing something right because my hairdresser was sick on my appointment day and she knew I was leaving for Disney that weekend, she offered to meet me at the shop and still do my cut before my trip. Now that is dedication. (I told her no, of course and managed without.)

Hi!

I also have a similar question regarding my hairdresser - I have always given him 20% and have followed him 3 times over the years - I was actually his last client last week before he goes out on his own to his own salon. Now - the next time I see him how do I tip him? I was always told you don't tip the owner, but he has already told me how much he's invested in his new place done a lot of the wordwork, decorating, installing by himself, etc... so I know a tip would be appreciated - what would you do?

Thanks!

Melissa :)

Cut - $60 - tip $10
Highlights - $180 (including glaze) - $35
Wash, glaze removal - tip $5

I have a separate stylist/colorist. Luckily, I only get a haircut every 3 months or so, and highlights about every 5 months.

I don't ever get a color, but I get a cut and I normally have her flat iron it afterward... It's about $35 and I normally tip $7. I think 20% is pretty good... Now when she did my hair for my wedding, it was about $60 and I tiped $20 but it was a special occasion ;)

My bill is usually $110 with color and I tip $15-20.
When I moved to Chicago from New Orleans, it took THREE YEARS to find Jana. (For Chicago DISers, she is at the Thomas West salon). She totally rocks--she always remembers every detail so I go and relax and I come out perfect! She is the female version of my New Orleans hairdresser that I went to since I was 19 years old. (Michael Grosch at the Michael Franks Salon in Harvey for the New Orleans DISers! Totally worth the trip to the best bank!).

I tipped my New Orleans hairdresser and his assistant when I went there and he was an owner.

Mine doesn't accept tips because she is co-owner. My cut and color cost me $35.00. I also have her daughter in my daycare so at Christmas I do a really nice gift basket for her. Kind of makes up for the no tipping.

Mine is 140 and I tip 30-40. My lady works out of her house and since I only need to do this 4 times a year I probably overtip. But she does work me in whenever I need her.

More: Mine was in a shop(s) for a while and then openned her own place. Even when she was the owner, I still tipped the same as when she just worked in someone else's shop. Unfortunately with the economy as bad as it is, just last month she had to give up her shop after 4 years and now is back working for someone else. She had been saying, though not complaining, that people were cutting back so much that she just couldn't make it anymore. She said people were going without haircuts and coloring their own hair and she was feeling the cut backs. :sad2:

Count me in as the "color myself" crowd. It was costing me $50-60 every 6 weeks because these darn grey roots come in so fast. I started using the Clairol Root Touch up and then thought why not, and did my whole head myself. Piece of cake. I totally agree that the quality of salon products is better but hey, its not worth over $500 year when I can do it for less than $50 with coupons and sales.

When I did get it done at the salon I did not tip high as my colorist is also part owner.

My cut/color is $90 I usually tip $20. I've been going to her for years and she can usually work me in her schedule even though she is very busy. She also lets me pop in from time to time to just trim my bangs and she will never charge me so I give her a $10 tip for that. It's a constant fight with her to take the money but she is so great with me and always accomodates me. (granted I don't think I'm a PIA about my schedule but she is just great!)

Just a question:Do you tip 20% when you eat out?Your server is with you maybe 10 minutes out of the time you are eating. With your stylist, you are with them about an hour and a half, sometimes longer.Isn't their time worth more? They have products, etc they still have to pay for and if you are tipping them $5 that pays for part of their product. They are there to make money, just like you are at your job.

I am a stylist and you would be amazed at how little we really are paid. The tips really help and it makes us happy. After a 9 hour day,on my feet the whole time,it is nice to be able to use my tip money to buy dinner on my way home for my family,as well as adding it to my Disney fund, bills, etc.

I do live in a smaller town.Granted,I did hair all over the country and this is by far the worst the worst tipping place I have worked.I only do it to get out of the house now.DH makes enough now that I don't need to work.I work part time and my whole check goes to Disney.Yeah.

My hairdresser is the owner of a very large salon- but I still tip 20%. I've gone their for almost ten years.

My hairstylist owns his shop and I still tip him at least 20%. I would be embarrassed to tip anything less than 15%, and that would be a bare minimum for somebody who just did an OK job or was not at all personable (like stylists who completely ignore you and talk over the top of your head to the other stylists the entire time :rolleyes1 ). For somebody who does a good job, 20% is the minimum I would tip.

In general, stylists don't make a lot of $$, and somebody who owns their own shop or rents a chair has a lot of expenses. My last stylist worked in a nice mall salon and told me he could make $20 an hour when he was very busy but actually averaged $10/hr due to slow times. (No health insurance, either.) He did not make one penny when he wasn't cutting hair; he made a percentage on each person he worked on, plus tip.

My cut/color costs $110 and I tip $22-25 and I make sure I pay everything in cash.

I've been with my hair stylist for over 18 years now- I always tip 20% and prepay for DH's cut along with 20%. She is the sole operator of her shop but always accepts the tip. I give a gift at Christmas but not huge like some I've heard of- she is also a client at the animal hospital I work at and we email "funnies" to each other.
