Hello All!

What do you spend in groceries per month. On another thread someone mentioned that $800.00 for 4 adults was about right. WOW, is that right?

Personally, for my husband and I we spend about $75.00 per week. I buy food on sale, stock up on chicken fryers, pasta, fruit, frozen veggies, canned goods, pork loin etc. I make my own veggie burgers, make iced tea (cheap). Eat oatmeal, fruit (banana's) or eggs for breakfast. For lunches I make sandwiches (stretch out chicken salad or egg salad with added cut up veggies), bring yogurt, banana, and a side of oatmeal for a snack. For dinners its usually a baked potato (cheap) chicken, frozen veggie. I snack on Fat Free popcorn or sugar free hot chocolate. Anyway, those are the things we do. I can not afford to spending $800 or $900 a month in groceries.

What do you do? Or much much do you guys spend?

Thanks all!
Brunette

Hi

For our family, just "grocery" food items, we spend between $500 - $600 per month. I admit to being a coupon girl, and base my shopping around all the flyers. :thumbsup2

$100-125/week. It will probably go up a little after we move to Alaska next month. That's with couponing, sales and some convenience foods.

$500 ish a month plus a little bit extra a week for stuff that goes quickly or expres like Milk, fruits, salad etc.

It used to be less but with grocery prices going up I had to raise our budget fir food.
We have 2 adults and three kiddos ( boys who never stop eating )

We're a family of 6 (DH, me, DD15, DD13, DD10 and DS4) and we spend between $500-$600 a month on groceries. We rarely go out to eat, and the girls and I take lunches for school/work everyday, so this includes most all of our meals for the month. DH shops the sales flyers each week and we fill in whatever else we need at Aldi.

$600-$700 a month for 2 adults, 3 kids and 4 cats. This includes occasionally eating out, toiletries, cat food and litter.

Hey Brunette!

I think we are approx. $500-600/month. It is hard to come up with an actual amount, as we shop at Costco, and then supplement at grocery store, market or pharmacy with a food department. We have 2 fridges, 1 commercial freezer and a pantry, so we stock up on sales.

We cook 6 nights per week, as dinner is at parent's house each Sunday. We all bring our lunches each day, except for the 2 days our little guy goes to private school (he is at 2 schools - one with lunch included and 1 without). We also make hot breakfasts each morning, as we really don't eat boxed cereal much at all.

We batch cook a lot, and we buy meat at Costco, and hubby butchers it and freezes in Foodsaver bags. We don't buy pop, candy, convenience foods, etc., and we love making homemade soups, baked chicken breasts, stir fry, turkey burgers, homemade pizza, for instance.

We buy pretty much everything on sale, but food is expensive here, plus various taxes to deal with, but we also don't get many coupons here in Canada, so for 4 of us, all food, toiletries and paper goods included, we do well with our grocery budget as we eat healthy.

I spend $100 every other week when I get paid, and probably another $50 or so here and there when we need something. There are three of us - DH, DD16 and me. We only all three eat dinner at home probably 7 days out of 14, though - DD is gone every Wednesday and every other weekend (so F-S-S) and DH is a sportswriter so some evenings he's gone, too. We eat bagels or english muffins or oatmeal for breakfast, and DD spend $15 per week getting lunch at school. I buy frozen lunches for myself at 5/$10 and then supplement with fresh fruit or veggies for snacks. Oh, and my MIL takes us out to family dinner every Thursday.

I don't cook 100% from scratch like I'd like to, but being a working mom I do what I can. I'm not going to feel guilty if we eat mac and cheese out of a box or I buy frozen tortellini. We have a salad almost every night with dinner and we probably only have meat 5 days a week. But we definitely don't have big breakfasts or lunches - DH will generally have a lunch meat sandwich since he's the only one home for lunch.

It depends on where you live also prices vary from state to state.

For us we have 4 adults here dh me mil and bil and also dd's 9 and 5 and a new baby girl

Not including baby formula I budget 160$ a week for everything. That includes all paper goods and cleaning products. I cook 7 days a week eat lots of fruits and salads and stir fry veggies for lunches.

We try to buy mostly fresh and not a lot of processed food

As I mentioned in the other thread I spend about 800 per month at the grocery store. This includes cleaning supplies, dog/guinea pig food (2 dogs/2 pigs) for 2 adults and 2 teens. I have a 16 year old boy (who is always trotting friends in) - if I didn't have him it would probably be a lot less. We do not eat out and the kids take lunches to school>

On average we spend around 150 a week. I hit the warehouse store 1/month for bulk items. I have 2 sons who eat non stop. LOL. generally 600-700/month
that's not including eating out which we do. Saturdays is mom's day off (yeah!!) so most of the times its a few pizzas which will run us ~25 bucks or some times we will do cracker barrell for breakfast.

I spend about $500 to $600 a month on groceries. It varies. I usually go to Walmart once every 2 weeks and spend about $250 sometimes less.

DH is only home one week per month so when he comes back in town he buys his stuff which runs around $100-$150. So in total we spend about $600 if you count the stuff he buys.

And that is for me DS11 and DD12. Just 3 of us.

This question comes up so often it should be a sticky!

The answer is so subjective that no number anyone gives could have any relevance.

If you don't live in the same area, cook the same kind of meals, buy the same kinds of groceries and consume the same quantities, then there are too many variables to make a valid comparison from one poster to the next.

I don't buy my dog food in a grocery store. I don't get my paper supplies from a grocery store. I don't shop for cleaning products from a grocery store. And I don't buy baby formula or diapers anywhere! So, if you were to look at my grocery bill (which feeds two adults some weeks and 5 adults other weeks), you would think that I spend very little at the grocery store each month.

Sometimes, I wonder if the purpose of this type of thread is just to give posters permission to brag about how well they eat or how cheaply they can shop.

That is a good point, because I buy all of those things at a grocery store, and I don't have any dining out costs. It is probably a better question to ask how much you spend eating per month.

I spend about $250-$300 on groceries a month for my mom and I. I coupon heavily for household items so I spend maybe $40-$50 extra on that every three months. Cat items run me about $50 every three months (I buy food and litter in bulk).

We cook a lot at home, mostly from scratch. We eat smaller portions of meat, so a package of hamburger or other meats stretches. I buy meats on sale and freeze them into meal sized portions. We eat leftovers for lunches. Breakfast is usually cereals or frozen waffles (That I make from scratch and freeze). I buy fruits and veggies that are in season or buy frozen to use.

For us it varies widely depending on the time of year because I buy seasonally and in bulk. During the summer it isn't unusual for me to spend $200/week just at the farmer's market, but during the winter I spend about $100 every other week and we eat mostly out of the freezer and pantry. Over a year we probably average ~$600/mo for our family of 5 people and 1 dog.

We are a family of three. I meal plan, but don't use coupons. I average $75-$100 per week. We do one take out meal a week, and go out to eat about twice a month.

i spend about $400-$500 per month for our family of three, but that includes cleaning and personal supplies, paper products and dog treats. i price match a LOT, but there aren't many coupons out there for the things we use, so i watch sales very carefully.
