How much do you pay for shoes?

I had a friend who was in her late 50's... She retired and always wore pumps. I once commented that she didn't need to get dressed up all the time. She told me that after 30+ years in business, her feet hurt in flat shoes.

I pay a good amount for shoes but it is worth every penny. I will say the low side is $100.

For me, I have to "dress" for work and wear heels or boots. I don't stay on my feet all day (secretary) so don't usually pay a large amount. Got some comfortable heels today at Steinmart for $50. They have a boot like heel so makes them much easier to walk in.

For boots I pay more because I will wear them much longer and more often (wear them on weekends with jeans), usually around $100. Dh wears boots everyday. His are usually closer to $200 a pair, but they will last him for a very long time. Right now he has 3 pair--one for work (truck driver), one for working around here on fences and with the horses and a "dress" pair.

For dd (13), it just depends. She is wanting a pair right now that are $129 but they have to be custom made (for the style she wants) so I am putting it off to make sure she really wants these things. Normally her shoes are anywhere from $30-50.

Someone mentioned the lady with the heels and flats not being comfortable anymore. DH is this way with boots (cowboy boots). Even with all the walking in WDW, he still wears boots. He tried wearing tennis shoes and his back started hurting so he went back and got his boots.

$100 for a pair of boots is not a lot. I routinely spend $100 on shoes. As a matter of fact my 2 main pair of shoes I wear are both clogs with wedge type heels on them, one brown leather and one black leather and I paid $125 for each of them at Dillard's ON SALE. My K-Swiss tennis shoes (plain white leather) cost $90 plus tax and shipping. I am not a show snob by any means because I would never spend $600 on a pair of Jimmy Choo heels, but I also would never buy a pair of shoes from Payless or Walmart.

Cole Haan makes some nice shoes for men but they are pricey. If your son is picky about his shoes I am sure they make something he will like.

If you want to be shocked, go try to buy him a pair of those black leather boots from the Harley store. You will pay $600 ON SALE. Consider $100 a bargain.

Some things it is ok to be cheap about. If you want to eat generic food or use generic home and bath products, go for it. Save some pennies, but with shoes, I would never try to go CHEAP. You definitely get what you pay for.

Cole Hahn is owned by Nike, so the quality that they used to have is now gone. Good shoes are always worth the money!

Just paid 125. on flat short boots. I wear wide widths. Men shoes IMO r higher than women's. I don't buy heals anymore so when I buy shoes I get ones that will be comfortable and last. I think u r being cheap.

I watch Nordstrom Rack and Marshalls to find good quality shoes for myself for under $50. My husband does the same.

My son is a skateboarder and goes through tennis shoes like kleenex. And skate shoes aren't cheap.

My daughter will wear anything. She's comfortable in anything, and her feet are growing fast enough that we don't "invest" in shoes. She does get a decent pair of tennis shoes (New Balance or similar) twice a year, but she's really a flip flop in summer/knock off Ugg in Winter type of girl.

I've been having a discussion about this with DS16. Keep in mind that more by circumstance than nature, I have become very cheap. DS is VERY fussy about footwear -- refuses to wear sneakers for anything but gym class (and even then isn't happy about it), and has wide feet, making it difficult to find what he likes. A couple of months ago, his boots (not snow boots, more like black leather sort of maybe biker type boots, which were his everyday shoes) fell apart, and after shopping several places -- and we had to get them that day because he had nothing else -- I spent $70 on a new pair, which made me gag. Now, he's decided that pair is not comfortable for all the walking he does, and asked for a new pair for Christmas. Again, we shopped, and the only pair that fit and that he liked was $100 - at DSW!

Now, I understand in the real world (the world of people who buy things at normal prices, not cheapskate prices), $100 is probably not out of line. But I've only spent that on my footwear once -- a pair of specialized shoes for arthritic feet -- and I can't see spending that kind of money on shoes. But am I being overly cheap? Or is $100 for a good brand that should last quite a while not out of line? (Or am I talking to the wrong audience? :lmao:)

Look into replacing the sole of his boots. If the body of the boot is still in good condition than, repair the sole and it can continue the life of the boot. My dad does this with his boots.

About the only shoes I pay more than $50 for is DH shoes and DD ballet pointe shoes(specialy shoes:rolleyes: ). DH is a Marine and he runs alot, between his boots and running shoes, we spend a pretty penny:rolleyes1 But we always look for the best price we can find.

Good luck

A good resole might only cost you about $35 a pair. I had it priced out once.

My ex, working on the docks of Tom Sawyer's Island could wear out a new pair of boots in 3 months. Nothing wrong with the upper part, but she'd wear away the sole so fast walking on the non skid. Since the soles are thicker on boots, but for the most part hollow on the inside, once she wore enough away, water would seep up from the bottom keeping her feet wet all day (since you can count on rain showers almost every other day, and the hosing down to clean in the morning). The boots were only like $30 at walmart, but they discontinued the style. I looked into a cobbler, and only charged $35 to resole it. Never did get it done though.

Might be cheaper in the long run to drop a good penny on quality leather boots, and have them resoled every year as a Christmas present.

Don't cheap out on shoes. I know people who had parents buy the cheapest or poorest quality shoes possible and it just caused health problems. (feet , legs, joints) Basically if the shoe doesn't fit right or has poor support is causes you to put more pressure on areas that don't need it.

Lots of the more expensive brands can probably be found for less than the cheaper brands. If you look for sales! My mom has become cheap about shoes and its caused her some serious joint issues.(she used to be all about quality and getting shoes with the right support) Even her doctor said she needs to go get fitted and get correct shoes. And still she won't buy good shoes!! So I end up going out with her and paying for nice shoes and lying to her about the price. "Yeah mom these cost $25..." I just don't tell her about the extra 1 in front. :rolleyes1

My husband has a few pairs from college that have been resoled several times.

Three words - price per wear

My everyday shoes are the best price I can find on a high quality shoe. Last pair was $105. Pair before that, over a year ago, were only $45.

Heels for Sunday, weddings, and the very occasional dress up evening can be cheap shoes. Last pair was $29.

Just for fun shoes like the red or teal sandals that get worn with only one specific outfit came from the thrift store at about a buck.

I would say that's a lot (IMO). I never pay more than $20 tops for shoes... it's usually around $10 if I can help it. DH buys work boots for $35 but that's maybe once a year. I can't imagine spending more than that. I see no difference in the shoes that are more expensive. They still get worn just as quickly.

I think Converse are a case of expensive, name brand shoes that are horrible for your feet. My DD wore a pair as her "good" shoes for years because they were "in" with her friends. DD had foot problems after wearing some cheap Target shoes and ended up seeing a podiatrist, but with her sturdy shoes being Converse, I bet they contributed as well. I wouldn't pay big bucks for shoes like that (we got ours cheap, too). Looking back, I wish I'd not bought them due to all her foot problems.

My son had an ingrown toenail and the podiatrist took one look at his favorite Converse high tops and said "Do Not Wear those shoes anymore".

Its hard to find shoes on sale for men. My Daughter has found them online for her husband. I am sure they pay under $100 for name brand shoes you would find at the mall. Sometimes its a buy one get one 1/2 off. Seems like Finish line is one place she gets deals. I believe she was able to return them to the Finish Line at the mall if they did not like them.

If he wants the real expensive pair, do as my sister did, she paid the regular price and her sons had to pay the difference for the name brand shoes.

I'll pay pretty much what I have to.

I have wide feet and my size is so hard to find that I skim the stack of shoes for my size before I really look at the shoe. I've put off shopping so long that I'm in a crisis situation. I've had the week off and one of the things on my "to do" list was to buy at least one, preferably two pairs of shoes. I've been to about 10 stores. At Off Broadway, there were a lot of shoes I liked, but I found one pair in my size (I did not look at sneakers or high heels), which I really didn't like. I tried on Sketchers in medium width -- I think that might work but wasn't really what I was looking for to wear to work. Finally, the last store I went into was the Rockport Outlet, and I came out with two pairs of shoes! Their prices are a little less than retail and they were offering buy one, get one 50% off, so I got two pairs for about $110.

I really wish I could wear cheap shoes, but except for flip flops and Crocs, it's not possible.

I pay good money for my running shoes and dasko's for work. However, I always buy shoes on sale, even the more expensive ones. I'm totally fine buying shoes from payless shoes, walmart, and target too. More or less flats or occasional heels.
