Here in IOWA, we pay the lowest rates in the nation!!

Iowa has lowest auto insurance

By The Associated Press

DES MOINES -- Maybe it's the uncongested roads or the honest drivers, but whatever the reason, Iowa is once again paying the least for automobile insurance.

According to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, the average annual premium in Iowa in 2003 -- the latest year for which statistics are available -- was $679.

That's nearly a third less than the national average of $939 and just half of what drivers pay in the costliest state, New Jersey.

"That's a nice surprise, especially now that I'm paying more for gasoline," said Scott Valbert. He moved to Des Moines from Charlotte, N.C., in June and estimated that his auto rates have dropped 30 percent.

Officials at the Iowa Insurance Division cited low population density, traffic enforcement and good roads as some of the many reasons behind the state's best-of-show ranking.

Bob Skow, chief executive officer of the Independent Insurance Agents of Iowa, credited the good rates to, among other things, a good regulatory system that has encouraged hundreds of insurers to offer policies in Iowa, and a legal system that is fair but doesn't often produce large verdicts.

"Iowans are good drivers. Good, responsible people," Skow said.

The association's study totals the combined average premium paid for bodily injury and property damage liability, collision and comprehensive coverages.

Even with the lowest cost, Iowa drivers are paying more because premiums have increased 25 percent in five years, the study shows. Nationally, rates rose 19.6 percent during the same time.

Iowa recently raised speed limits on most interstate highways to 70 mph from 65 mph. That could affect rates, Chance said, "but how much, I don't know."

We pay $450. every six months. That's for 2 cars (both Chevy Blazers). They're both financed, so we have to have all the bells and whistles on the policy. We get a big discount for paying in full every six months instead of paying monthly.

My friends and family in MA want to kill me. :teeth:

We pay $155 a month.
We have a 2000 car and a 1997 truck.
No accidents/violations!

$125 a month for (2) 1999 vehicles (one SUV and one sedan). That is with alot of bells and whistles plus the full tort option.

We pay around $230 a month because of DH's horrendous driving record. :sad2: I love that man with all my heart, but I hate being lumped into the same category with him when it comes to our insurance.

Here in PA, we pay $105 a month. That is for a 1998 Ford Ranger and 2003 Ford Escape. Clean driving records. Full tort. Slight discount for also having home owners through same company. I am seriously considering dropping collission on the Ranger if it will lower the monthly bill enough.

If we lived closer to Philly though, that would at least double.

I remember when we moved from SE Iowa to Dallas and changed over our policies. I was sitting there in the agent's office and I seriously said to DH "We're not going to be able to eat!!" (OK I did say it, and I was kidding, but it went up THAT much!!) Can't remember now how much that was, wish I could.

We pay around $580 every 6 mos for our 04 F150. We get a big discount, too, for paying in full rather than go on the installment plan.

We pay about $100 a month for full coverage for a 2003 Chevy 3/4 ton pickup and a 2005 Honda Pilot...we both have clean records (knock on wood) and get a discount for having homeowners ins with the same company.

i just saved a bunch of money by switching to geico. :teeth:

Here in West Virginia we just got a state wide discount and still pay $195 a month. That is for a 2001 Sequoia, 2002 Windstar (loaded so higher) and a travel trailer.(camper is about $12) Way too high!

Well before going to work for the insurance company we were paying 1800.00 a year for a 98 Chev Malibu we are now paying 694 a year for that and 1020.00 for the van. Before moving over we were going to be paying 235.00 a month for the van and car. My motorcycle insurance was over 2400 dollars a year.

Because this is such a horrible place to drive, we pay a whopping $275 a month. Used to be $355, but we got a second car and it dropped the rates.

$850 a year... full coverage / full tort option.

Ok, what is the full tort option????

Broken down it looks like this

86 K5 Blazer- liability only- with extra coverage for modifications- $300 for 6 months
2004 GMC Envoy- full coverage- $1100 a year
1997 VW Passat- liability only- $370 a year

Thats with 8 points on my license.....all speed related :)

It means that you are not capped under certain instances on how much you can be awarded for certain injuries. It is supposed to help keep insurance costs down. You pay a higher premium for full tort option.

options in a vehicle do not make the policy go up. If anything- they'd make it go down. If 2 identical vehicles were being insured- and 1 had side curtain air bags, and the other didnt- 1 would be slighty cheaper to insure.....

It is based on replacement cost, and repair costs- ie..how much those pieces of plastic will cost in the event of a collision...

Liabiliy is the same on any vehicle you own, as its insuring the driver...its comp and collision that changes

Exactly! If you carry only limited tort (costs less) you are only allowed to sue the other party in the case of an accident if there is "significant" pain and suffering. I learned the hard way when I was in an accident in 1993. Despite a week in the hospital, 6 months in PT/OT and jaw surgery - I still had to prove that I had significant pain and suffering  Took me over 3 years to settle my case (and the other drive was completely at fault - that wasn't even a question!)
