How much do I have to make before I'm taxed?

I've made $1530.69 so far and my employer has yet to take any federal taxes from my check.

I filled out my W4 with "Married - 1."

Payroll said they don't have to take any out yet, that I haven't made enough, but they won't tell me when they'll start taking it out.

I don't want to end up owing a ton at the end of the year. I've checked out the IRS website thoroughly and haven't found the info I need.

Does anyone know?

Thanks in advance.

I just pulled my 1st paystub of the year. My employer took everything - Fed, State, etc right from the start. I do not make 1500.00 net weekly.
Hope that helps.

Maybe you could check the irs.gov website??

I believe that if you make less than the 'standard deduction' ($10,300 for 2006), you don't pay taxes.

You can use the IRS withholding calculator to figure this out what you should be paying:

http://www.irs.gov/individuals/article/0,,id=96196,00.html

Figuring based on what you said, earning $1500 every two months, you'd make $9k this year, well under the deduction.

Of course, I'm not a tax professional, but I would tend to think that your employer knows what they are doing based on your monthly wages.

Sorry for mistyping. I read it as 1500.00 weekly!
I haven't made much more than that up to this point, but my deductions were taken right from the start of the year....

I've never had an employer not take out tax...sounds odd to me...I worked a few days for one company part time (it was a friends) to fill in for someone that was out for a few days...made 350.00 and there was state and federal tax taken out...there was also social security taken out which is a real kicker because at my real job we don't pay into social security, we have a private retirement fund, so I won't even have enough social security paid to ever collect it...

I thought if you earned over $800 in a year you had to pay taxes???

I believe the law isn't about "having to pay taxes" but rather having to file a tax return. Regardless, here are the limits:

Who has to file a tax return?
Just about everyone has to file an income tax return, except for people with relatively small incomes. The amount of income you can earn without having to file a return is determined by your filing status, whether you are a dependent on someone else’s return, and if you have reached age 65.

For 2005, you must file a return if your gross income is above the following limits:
  • Single, $8,200.
  • Head of Household, $10,500.
  • Married Filing Jointly, $16,400.
  • Qualifying Widow(er), $13,200.
  • Married Filing Separately, $3,200.
