How Much CASH???

We have a 7-day trip planned in May (w/ the dining plan). Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions on how much actual cash I should bring? I use my credit/debit for 90-95% of my purchases when I travel and always take some cash along.

Also, I see the dining plan includes gratuity--does anyone add additional tip on the table when they leave?

I brought $400 cash on our last trip which was a week (no dining plan) long. We use our room key for most things. The cash is good for unexpected things; tips, off site things like gas and the airport but we did use cash for some snacks.

Anyway, we came home with $120. left over.

In Sept/Oct we did a long weekend trip with the dining plan and I always left a bit more for a tip. I like to tip at least 20% for good service.

400 BUX! WOW! What am I doing wrong? The wife and I share a vacation kitty that is usually around 1300 to 1500 for a 7 day trip and we come home almost broke every trip. What's your secret. LOL

I think between the 2 of us we spend almost 6 or 700 just to eat for the week and we are not big eaters! Mind you we haven't used the dining option. I don't want to be tied down to a reservation to eat. we like going on the fly where and when we want. I guess I have some things to re-tool about our spending habits on vacation. But isn't that what vacation is for?

Like I said, we use our room key for most everything, so that means we use our credit card for most things.

When we get home, we pay it off with our vacation savings. I don't like carrying around too much cash so about $400 is our max and I didn't even use it all.

We bring very little cash w/ us on our trips to WDW. I pulled out $200 in travelers checks (just in case money), and $40 in ones (unexpected tipping and mousekeeping). Since we use our room keys and debit/visa/mc are accepted all over, we hardly ever have to use cash. I think we came home w/ $120 left over in travelers checks last time. We don't do the dining plan (too much food) so I am not sure about the gratuity question, but we just tip the same as if we were at home - at least 20% for good service.

Yeah its best to have some cash on you but I agree we use credit cards (aka room key) to pay for almost everything.

OP -- We are going in May this year also and like you we are on the Disney Dinning plan. Normally we would bring around $100 a person per day we are there for food and Souvineers... However, with the Dining plan we will probably only bring about $20-$30 per person per day (9 day trip with My DW and DSIL).

p.s. From what I gather a tip of 18% and tax is INCLUDED in the prepaid price so if you feel the service is way over quality then you can leave extra BUT as far as you are concerned you have already paid 18% tip for each meal!

We dont use credit or debit. We had the dining plan also. We took $700 in cash/travelers checks and came home with about $300.

You really don't need cash for anything. I brought about $50 with me on my trip last month (this trip was me, dd7, and ds5), and came home with about $55. I ended up not using one of my stroller tix, so they gave me a cash refund. I used cash for food at the airport when our flight was delayed. Oh, and we had the dining plan, so even the snack carts used our room cards. I ended up putting about $250 on our room card for the whole trip (6 nights). So, the only cash I used was at the airport (and I'm sure I could have used my debit card for that). Even the airport parking took credit cards.

We drive. We put gas on bank cards, so really we just pay for snacks/meals on the trip, plus snacks/meals/souvenirs while we're there. We're DVC members, so that takes lodging costs out of it for us. We don't usually do dining plans in the past (except for one trip). We budget $150 to $200 per day for the family of 4. We pre-plan where we'll be for which meal, so we know that a day that includes a LeCellier dinner is gonna be a lot more than a Chef Mickey breakfast day. That works for us pretty well. We tie the room reservation to a bank checking card. We have Internet banking so we can tell pretty well where we're at. Cash on hand is usually around $200 for incidentals.

We either do breakfast in the room, with a big mid-afternoon 'lupper' meal in park, and then late snacks or a pizza at the resort. Or we'll do a big breakfast in the morning, counter service/snacks for later in the day. We tend to eat heavier in WDW than we do day-to-day. Our kids have their own savings, which we supplement ($50-$100 for each kid for the whole trip). I get myself a big LEGO set, a DVD, a game, or a book; my wife will get herself clothes, jewelry, etc. Kids get themselves toys and their own candy for home, and we usually get them shirts and hats. We take a backpack with iced water, pop tarts/breakfast bars, & cracker packs with us every day.

My son is 11, so he's now at a higher price for meals. We'll do a dining plan this next time.

We do Disney cheaper than some, more expensive than others. We eat well (I personally feel like I overeat some days), we don't deny ourselves much, but we also don't leave with $1000 art pieces either.

We have a trip planned for May 3-14, 2006. My DH & I...I have budgeted $75.00 per day extra spending money, we will be going on the dining plan, and the mornings that we have breakfast planned I budgeted $30.00 more. This will be the 2nd trip planning this amount of money, and last trip we were able to buy each other really nice gifts as we left the parks on the last day, because we had so much left over. We still came back with $60.00 in our pockets left from just the spending money.

This amount is just spending money only. I have figured extra for the golf cart at Fort Wilderness for the week, the fishing excursion, and golf.
