How much are points worth if you put in a claim with trip insurance?

Hello,

I am not a DVC owner, but I have already rented from a member and am considering renting much more. I called the insurance company and am satisfied that they have a very liberal definition of what constitutes an event for which cancellation is covered (ie, sickness in the family as remote as a cousin, etc).

They also were proud to tell me they pay up to $15,000. Great. So the next question was that I am renting 175 points, how much will I get reimbursed if I have to cancel due to a covered event? Answer: Don't know. Disney sets value, I have to call Disney. Of course, I am not a DVC member so disney won't talk to me. I have heard they value the room at rack rate (one of the DVC members who posts here told me that) and I have heard around $6 per point (another DVC member who posts here told me that). Anyone know?

All I can tell you is that the reason I scoffed at the insurance because of the value it gave when you did have to cancel...I can't swear to it, but I think $6 per point may even be higher then what I remember. I seem to remember it just covering the dues.

Creeping socialism was seen hundreds of years ago when James Madison said: "I believe there are more instances of the abridgement of the freedom of the people by gradual and silent encroachments of those in power than by violent and sudden usurpations."

but, as I am in the middle of making a reservation for my trip for next year (one of those anal people who call day by day because I will be devistated if I don't get what I want!) I will be calling MS tomorrow. If no one else has posted I will ask about trip insurance and post the reply!

I have rented points and purchased trip insurance each time. I have had the misfortune to have to cancel on two different occassions (yes, we think we are jinxed!). The first time my 3 year old ended up with a double ear infection and was not allowed to fly. The last time my father in law fell off a ladder and remains in ICU today (3 weeks later). I did not insure the points. I insured the total cost of the trip (price I paid for DVC rental, airfare and priceline car rental). I received 100% of my money back a few years ago and I expect 100% back for this past trip. I highly recommend trip insurance when renting points or making regular reservations. That being said, we are purchasing an OKW resale and I will not buy insurance to cover the points. It is not worth it. I believe it is equal to $6 pp. However, I will continue to purchase flight and car rental cancellation protection - at least until the jinx wears off!!
